Why New Nursing Grads Are Facing a Tough Job Market: When Will it Get Better?

Many starry eyed nursing students count one of the reasons that chose the nursing profession is the security of a recession proof career. There is some truth to this; healthcare is one of society's most fundamental needs and there will always be jobs in this sector. Couple this with the fact that baby boomers are continuing to age and that the population as a general whole is getting sicker from chronic "lifestyle" ailments (diabetes, hear conditions, obesity), while living longer due to advances in treatment plans, then the need for nurses should, logically, continue to grow. Nursing Programs: Public vs Private Universitys, does it really matter?

What makes or breaks a good Nursing applicant once you are out looking for a job? Is it the school name? Or is it the NCLEX score and the clinical placements you had at school? As I applied to schools I was well aware of the tuition and costs and decided I was willing to get into this educational debt, and consider it as an investment. But should I get into this large debt if I have the choice not to? Read More...

TEAS Tips - Must Read

I have recently taken the TEAS V. Honestly, I am not the smartest person but I didn't have to study hard at all for the TEAS. All I really did were practice problems - and when I wasn't sure on one part, I would find the answers to it. I received a 80% in math, 95% in science, 99% English, and 95% in reading. Here is my experience with the whole test process... Read More...

Practicing NG Tube on each other?

I am in the process of applying to a local LPN program as soon as I get all my ducks in a row. I have been doing a lot of searching as to what all tasks a LPN can and cannot perform in my state and what is required for LPN's the learn in school. I have a general idea. My only fear at this point when it comes to school is if they will ask me to allow other students to practice inserting a NG tube on me. Read More...

Pretty sure my clinical instructor HATES me.

I have a Pharmacology ATI test tomorrow and am lacking ambition to actually study for it. It is worth 20 points at a Level 1, 17 for Level 2, and 15 at a Level 3, if we don't pass it we take it again, if we still don't pass it we get a 0. I'm just not concerned about 20 points I guess, I have heard that ATI is useless when it comes to NCLEX and if I don't have to pass it to pass the class, ugh, I would rather study the content that I need for upcoming tests that DO matter. Not that Pharma isn't important, because I do know it is, it's just ATI in general. Anyone have an opinion on ATI? Read More...

First clinical rotation finished, "not so glowing" evaluation

Has anyone else experienced this when they were new in school and how did you overcome it? My mind goes blank when the instructor asks me a question and I make common sense mistakes. I do meditate and try to work on any anxiety before clinicals with self-talk beforehand, yet inevitably it still comes up and I go blank. Read More...

When to start applying for jobs?

I graduate with my BSN in late July this year!

When should I start applying for jobs? Should I be applying now? Or do I need to graduate first? I am not sure how to do it because of graduating in the summer the semester is short and also it is a non-traditional graduation time. Most people I know got jobs before they passed the NCLEX and they were hired on a "as long as you pass the NCLEX" handshake so I know people don't always wait until they are licensed to apply. Suggestions? Read More...
