Nursing was never really my cup of tea. I never pictured myself wearing whites and a fancy little white cap. As a child, my dream was to become an engineer, a civil engineer. This manifested as I grew up being fond of drawing different, sometimes weird, structures and solving complicated math problems. Taking up nursing never even crossed my mind.

As nurses why do you guys think that medications only treat the symptoms of a disease instead of curing the disease? Is it because no one has come up [with] any cures yet? Or do you guys think it's a conspiracy? I for one think it's a conspiracy and that's what I'm writing a paper on. Just wanted to know
how you all felt.
I worked at a teaching hospital for about a year. I really enjoyed closely interacting with the interns, residents and staff physicians. Many times hilarious orders were written by the newbies. One of my personal favorites was from an intern who only wrote "Vicodin" and that was it. No route, dosage, frequency, etc. Haha! We also had a doctor write "b4" in the chart. We assumed they meant "before." I guess they forgot that this wasn't text messaging. Lol! We also had an older doctor who would write things like, "please call help desk to get the printer fixed." Yes, in the chart. Good times. Please share any of your funny stories from charts!
So what things have you done without a doctor's order, for a patient? I don't think I'm too bad, I'll send off a stool for c-diff if a patient has diarrhea, order a stat ABG for a pt in resp distress before calling the doc as well as an x-ray and will order a blood test or something if I think its necessary. I don't think I have ever given a med though, without an order
... But I do know nurses that give out a maalox or robitussin without calling the doc. So I just wanna know, what kind of things do you feel comfortable doing without an order?

My foundations teacher stressed that the faculty doesnt expect us to read our nursing books like theyre magazines and encouraged us to skim and just read all of the info in the little side boxes, etc. My problem is that I feel like if I dont read the entire chapter I'll miss out on important info. I know some people are really good skimmers, but Ive never done it before so I feel uncomfortable with even trying it.
o my question is how many of you skim and how many of you actually read? And for those of you who skim, do you feel like you miss out on important points in the text or no?
I am curious if I am doing too much, or not enough! I would love to hear how often everyone studies and if you dont mind sharing, what your general GPA/letter grade is. I spend at least 3 hours every night studying, and weekends are a free for all. This has worked well so far (pre-reqs) but I havent taken my first nursing test yet... I hope its enough!
I'll be starting the nursing program for my school next week. I have all my supplies, books, and things that I need... but I'm at a considerable disadvantage seeing as I don't have a car or a job right now.
I hear about people that work 40 hours a week or more, but I just don't see how you can do that unless you're "working" at a job that allows you to sit down, read, or use the internet freely. I know most certainly that I couldn't work a retail job 40 hours, heck, not even 30 hours and still pass school.
Regional Discussion - Pennsylvania
I've been an LPN in PA for the last four years. Prior to getting my license though, I did some modeling for a company, some of it nude but tasteful(no, not porn). I work with someone that used to model for the same company as well, and we're both curious if the board of nursing can and will revoke our licenses if they're found. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love being a nurse and I can't see myself doing anything else.
