Starting Nursing at 52 and Nervous

I just graduated in May and turned 52 in July. I've been offered a job on a telemetry floor and am very glad about it. I am also nervous about what to expect...I know the first year can be a devil for any new nurse but I have the added worry that I am an older nurse and just beginning. I'd love to hear advice from any and all but especially nurses who entered the profession at an older age...

Diet Soft Drinks May Increase Risk of Preterm Birth

The consumption of artificially sweetened soft drinks, both carbonated and noncarbonated, is associated with an increased risk for births occurring before 37 weeks' gestation, according to research published online June 30, ahead of the print issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

What's your reason for putting up with it?

I have been a CNA for a little over a year now as I am transitioning into the health care field. During this time, I have observed the nurses I work with, who happen to be all female so far.

I have noticed nearly every female nurse I have worked with puts up with things that would shock someone not in healthcare. Things that would get you arrested if you tried them outside of a facility. Things that I personally can't tolerate.

What I want to know is, if you are a nurse that puts up with these actions, why do you do it?

Do you see a generational gap in nursing?

I don't know if it is just me, or just where I work, but I am seeing a major generational gap between nurses. The ones in their mid 20's just seem to be lacking a work ethic. I am not an old foggie, I am 43. the newer gals just don't get why they cant have day shift, or every holiday off, or why seniority in a union facility counts.

I am not bashing young nurses, or "eating the young". I am just seeing a lack of work ethic with this generation. My friend who is in business sees the same. Did we as parents screw this generation up some how? Or will they eventually grow up?

What is this Press-Ganey business?

Never heard of it until I started using this site. I've seen it referred to a bunch of times on here. My facility doesn't use this, so I have no clue. I googled it -- apparently it is some sort of QA/QI company that sends out surveys to patient post-discharge ... and what exactly do the hospitals do with this information? From what I've seen on here, it makes nurses lives miserable.

So internal QA/QI departments aren't good enough anymore?

What is so bad about STATS?

I'm taking statistics this fall along with my first semester nursing classes and everyone I tell this to says, "REALLY? You're taking stats too?!?!?! Good luck with that!!!!"

Can anyone give me a heads up? Math isn't really my favorite subject but I don't exactly struggle with it either. I know the teacher and he comes highly recommended!

Well, No Nursing for Me

After carefully thinking about it, I have decided not to do nursing. I do however thank everyone for the advice they gave me. I would like to do nursing, but virtually all of the schools in my area use exit exams, which I find are unfair. The more I research them, the more I dislike them. Here is just one recent article I found, in which the ENTIRE nursing class failed the exit exam. Unbelievable.

Crazy Organization Lately Anyone?

I've been in hyper overdrive cleaning. This week has been the worst. Orientation is Thursday and school starts the following Monday I believe - so I feel like if my house isn't spotless and a good schedule is in place, it'll be in total shambles. It's just me, my husband, and our dogs - but I'm the type that can't relax when there is clutter everywhere...

Olive Harvey close Nursing Program

Well it is official, Olive Harvey has closed its nursing program, or should I say reassigned its nursing students to Daley, Truman and Malcolm X. Students were notified today, 7 days before class start. What a political mess with many incompetent individuals following the orders of a bully Mayor who wants to eliminate remedial courses (open door policy) at CCC's. How sad.
