Half-way through nursing school, Dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He helped me gain the insight that death is a part of life. I found faith and inspiration to prove that anything is possible, even in the face of adversity.

This has to be one of my BIGGEST pet peeves, from way back when I was a CNA. Maybe *technically* they are diapers, but COME ON....how disrespectful can you get? I call them Depends or briefs, it at least maintains SOME dignity for the patient. Especially if they are post op, say, and are having trouble controlling their bowels as function returns to normal, and they've never had to wear them before. It's rude and demeaning.
I don't know the woman in question, yet news reports acknowledge that Facebook has caused another job termination casualty in the nursing community. I know there are numerous posts regarding this topic, yet I figure sharing this may help someone think twice when placing job/career related postings on Facebook no matter how private you think your posts are! What would you do?
I have noticed in the last year or so that there are more and more negative postings. Some OPs will post innocent topics and get torn a new one for nothing. Why? We should be encouraging one another and not be putting people down. The saying "nurses eat their young" ... I once thought it was not true, but I am beginning to think it is.

I am a caring person and have always been fasinated with the human body. I surround myself with anything medical. Every TV show I watch is about doctors or nurses. This isn't all I watch but the majority of my shows are health dramas. It's an obsession. When I go online if I'm not on Facebook I'm on allnurses.com.
Hello all, this is my first post to the site so I'm a bit nervous but I want some real answers from those in the field, and I don't want it sugar-coated as some of my friends/family may have been doing.
Long story short: I am morbidly obese (over 300 lbs) and have been working on getting in better shape over the past year. While I have lost some weight, it's a slow process. The reason for my recent determination, aside from WANTING to be healthier, is that I want to be a nurse (with all my heart) and I do not want my weight to limit me in providing top quality care to anyone. I also know the perceptions people have of obese people in the medical field (not to mention anywhere else).
I won't be in nursing school for another few semesters, but at times I can't wait being a male being around a lot of women, especially considering that I'm only 19 ... there are other times where I personally feel that it might be bad at times being the only male in the class - especially with hearing women's issues most of the time. So, I would like to get a perspective of working with females from well..., females. The Good and the Bad.

I'm about to start taking my prereqs toward the Ocean County College nursing program. Do you think volunteering at a hospital a few hours a month is a good idea while I am attending school? I want to do that not only to see what the hospital setting is like, but also so I can have hospital volunteer work on my resume--would that help me get a job once I become a RN in a few years?
