A transition in focus: From individualized bedside nursing care to global healthcare

Choosing nursing as an undergraduate degree was largely to heed my father’s wisdom. It was later on that I learned the vocation nursing truly is. Nursing provided a knowledge that was rewardingly and unmistakably focused on the individual’s needs at the bedside. Practicing nursing day in and day out made it practically challenging to see that there was a different world out there and that the focus can shift.

Posting advice: "I can't do this, ...I don't understand you"

I saw a post asking why no one responded to the OP's other posts and it got me thinking. I should point out that this has NOTHING to do with her(?) posts other than it started the gears turning, but when I see a post written in txt, I shut it down and move on. If I see a post with a paragraph-and-a-half and no punctuation in it, I move on. If English is your second language, of course people will make allowances. But if you were raised with it, I make none.

The best nursing advice you've ever received

I was just thinking back to the advice and wisdom I'd received over the years and laughed at how true so much of it was! Can anyone post the best nursing advice they've been given here? Here are some of my favorites...

Why did you join allnurses?

As many of you are aware we "allnurses' staff went to Washington DC and had a booth in the exibitors floor. During our time at the booth in DC we had many people who said they surfed allnurses.com site but didnt join and become members even though it is free to join. So my question is what made you take the plunge and become a member?

Pre nursing vs nursing which one is more difficult?

Which courses did you find more difficult and challenging in terms of time spent studying , stress level etc..., the ones in pre nursing section or the ones in the nursing section. I am finishing pre nursing and it has been really challenging and just wanted to have a glimpse of what nursing courses are like....

How do you wash your scrubs?

I start nursing school in August and just bought my scrubs. This is probably silly, but I noticed on the tags that they are machine wash cold. Is this the standard for scrubs or is it the particular brand that I bought? Washing in hot water would kill any bacteria brought home from the hospital, but I don't want to ruin my scrubs by washing in hot. My scrubs are navy, so I can't add bleach, either. How do you wash your scrubs?

What would you do?

Please share your response on this scenario: Demented geriatric patient fell on concrete floor from wheelchair, sustained a laceration near the corner of the eye and bleeding was controlled. c/o pain in injured area. He is able to mention his name when asked. He is disoriented to time and place, same as baseline. He moves his hands as he has been known to do. Vital signs stable.Neuroassessment done. Pupils round and equal, able to follow objects. No distortion in the face. No fluids coming out of facial openings. Able to move extremities when instructed to do so. Grasps hands when asked to do so, equal. No episode of unconsciousness, no seizure, no sign of distress.

Chicagoland jobs for new grads?

Naturally, I would love to get a great job at a reputable hospital. But the downturn in the economy means the job market is getting tight for new grads. Outside of hospitals, what are the options? Are there more difficult and less desirable positions that are still up for grabs??
