I repeatedly see posts displaying total ignorance of most basic economic issues and how it affects them. I have friends who are recruiters who get resumes that are a disgrace from people that have a BSN. I have coworkers that have no clue of how financial issues work.
I see repeated posts from new grads and experienced nurses about ignorance of local pay rates - do you not research your job field BEFORE you spent 2-4 years getting a degree or deciding to move across country?
You don't think that your credit rating, or your DUI or your conviction from check is going to follow you? Or that it should affect you.
I was recently hired onto a new unit, and am hoping to get some advice regarding tactful ways to deflect requests for personal information as a new staff member. I fully understand that when my coworkers ask me about my personal life, they are just trying to get to know me, and have good intentions.
Could other people who have been in a similar situation please give me a few suggestions for how to handle this in a friendly, tactful and respectful way that will allow me to keep the aforementioned information to myself?
There's been a debate on another thread about the way scrubs, particularly patterned scrubs, are perceived by non-nurses. The original poster's position was that they diminish the respect (or potential for respect) other health care professionals have for nursing. Many members argued that patients, particularly paediatric and geriatric patients, prefer them.
Research indicates that the public find it harder to identify nurses...

I have been wondering about one of my residents who has advanced alzheimers and hits very hard any time anyone but her husband touches her. She also scratches, grabs, and squeezes, and has come very close to breaking my fingers. She is bedridden but still has very strong arms, and cannot speak but yells very loud. I've tried talking to her many different ways, even singing to her which sometimes helps for a few minutes (holding her hands and singing "say say my playmate" is a good way to make her smile) but I can't do that and give care at the same time.
Recently another CNA suggested putting a blindfold on her so we can get in close to give care without restraining her or getting hit. Does anyone know if this is considered abuse?
This is my second week of an accelerated BSN program. Things are crazy and we are already doing clinical at a LTC facility. Today driving home I almost broke down in tears because of the way some of the STNA's and LPN's were treating the patients. Now I am obviously no expert, and I am fully aware of how short staffed these facilities are, but it seemed like they were doing everything I have been told not to do. For instance, I was bathing a woman...
When I quit my job I knew I needed to get a job in a hospital. I was working at a health food store at the time trying to make ends meet and I met a great lady. I told her I wanted to be a nurse and had some books out at the register to study with anytime business got slow. She told me her husband was a CRNA and I mentioned that I was ambitious and wanted to do that someday. He came in, I met him and he asked me if I wanted a job at the hospital he worked at. Of course I did.

As I've posted on these boards previously, I am a recent grad working nights in emergency at a hospital in the Detroit suburbs. I was recommended to the position by one of my old clinical instructors, who works as a night-shift case manager in this department when she isn't teaching. We had had a very good working relationship in clinical, and still do as colleagues in the EC.
There's just one slight problem...
