Regional Disparities Seen for Diagnoses, Medicare Spending

There are substantial differences in diagnostic practices across U.S. regions, and policymakers looking to control Medicare costs first must understand the sources of the substantial regional differences in Medicare spending, according to a pair of studies published online May 12 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Tips for calling MD

My confidence isn't where it needs to be. Manytimes on my shift, I had to call the oncall physician after hours for various reasons. On more than one occasion I've had less sympathetic doctors ream me. I want to get better, can anyone give me any tips?

Situation on the road today - help me learn from it?

We saw a car going the opposite direction start to drift with the driver slumped over his steering wheel....it came to a stop.... I approached his car and he was slouched over an open cell phone, unresponsive, eyes closed. Took a while of knocking - I was worried he'd had a heart attack or a stroke. I was terrified for a minute that I was going to have to use my somewhat newly acquired CPR skills. He finally started to alertness, looked bewildered, then embarassed. He stated he was fine and had no chest pain or shortness of breath, that he just fell asleep - felt weird and empowering to be the person to know at least some of what to ask him. He would not pull off the road and let me call for someone to come get him and he did end up going on his merry way, very embarassed. I really hope he is okay and wish he'd waited a bit longer for the EMTs to arrive. So critique me - what else could I/should I have done? I feel like this is a great learning opportunity if nothing else....

Help! Dealing with Alzheimer's!

I know I've written about my mother and her Alzheimer's in the past. It's been a very good year and a half or so. Mom and I have had a far more pleasant relationship than ever before, and we've actually been enjoying our daily phone conversations and frequent visits. She's living in a wonderful Assisted Living facility that she loves. She constantly tells me that the food is good, the place is clean and the people are wonderful to her. In the last few days, however, Mom has become convinced that my father has left her for another woman.

What is expected from ATI TEAS Test?

I have just been admitted to the R.N program this Fall 2010. I received a letter from my college today saying that I must take an ATI TEAS test with a passing score of 67. I am from San Francisco, CA and I am wondering if anyone took this test and what should be expected from it. I was also wondering if anyone has websites or book titles that may help in preparing for this test??? I am freaking out since the test is in two weeks

Any other pre-nursing students over 45?

I've been working on mostly non-math courses so far and I will be finishing up most of my pre-req's including Mth120 and A&P 1 at the end of Fall. I'm concerned about the NLN pre-entrance test for RNs. Has anyone on this forum over 40 taken it?

Flashcard suggestions for A&P class

I am taking a prereq course (Anatomy and Physiology) soon and was hoping to get a jump start on studying and assist my notetaking once the class begins. I figure A&P must be a class where there are already some really good flash cards out there so that I do not waste a lot of time writing flashcards, but spend more time studying them. Plus, my artistic skills aren't that great, thus, I figure I will better understand the pre-made flashcards than my own diagrams! Any suggestions...

Another fun music video...

Another fun hospital music video...this one done by the hospital I work at...interesting that the ED isn't in it...think we are the redheaded step child...or could it be that I've kicked the media guy out of my dept a couple times?

Seeking information on BSN programs in Colorado: Pros/Cons

I am seeking information on BSN Programs in Colorado (Denver/Colorado Springs) and the Pros/Cons to the different schools. I am familiar with CU Health Sciences and Regis, but not as familiar with the smaller colleges (ie. Platte or Concorde). I do not know which programs offer the best education, experience, etc.
