The Baby Boomer generation, those born between 1946 and 1964, is the largest demographic group in U.S. history. Boomers, 76 million strong, comprise one quarter of the total U.S. population. The oldest members of this massive cohort are about to enter their senior years. This first wave, consisting of approximately 2.7 million people, will turn 65 in 2011. I don't know if it bothers anyone else, but I think that constantly texting at work (I mean constant, like their eyes never leave the phone) when you are suppossed to be taking care of patient's is so unprofessional. This is not just any job, we are nurses and we should be taking things seriously. It is so annoying to me especially when the person is ignoring their patients and the patient alarms, pumps, etc. Don't people know that you are at work and that you can not talk to them all day? What would you be doing before text messaging came around? read more

As far as I am concerned, it is most definitely not appropriate for caregivers to have an outside relationship (even on facebook) with a patient or resident under their care. I spoke with the director of the facility and she agreed with me. So I spoke with two of the three and both of them said that they agreed to take the resident as a friend and now they regret it. They don't know how to remove the resident as a friend and explain it. I told them to tell the resident that it's not appropriate and that the head nurse asked them to do so. That's the easy part. read more

I will be graduating this December from a BSN program in Illinois. I have been applying to many hospitals and want to make my first nursing position as positive as possible. I recently received a job offer from level 1 hospital in the ICU. They will reimburse me $5000 of my tuition for a 1 year commitment, they will pay for my NCLEX test and review courses. After I get all my certifications I will be making about $25/hr. I still have other interviews coming up, but they are only giving me 5 days to make a decision. I would really like to start in an ICU, however I would also like to be in the Chicago area and this hospital is in a rural setting. I want to ask for a 5% increase when I call the HR person back. How should I go about doing this? read more

Is anyone starting Denver school of nursing in April 2010? I am in the upper level BSN program. I need suggestions on where to live. I need to be outside of Denver city limits due to a breed restriction. I am trying to find the closest city to Denver with the least amount of traffic. read more
