FDA states Prilosec & Plavix not to be given together. But.... by elprup

FDA states that Prilosec or any stomach acid blocker, proton pump inhibitor (PPI), cannot be given at all with Plavix, an anticoagulant med. (Even spacing out the time between each med does not help). This is due to the fact that the stomach acid blockers reduce the effects of the Plavix like 45% - wow huh? read more

Half of ICU Patients Suffer From Infections by brian

About 50 percent of intensive care unit patients worldwide suffer infections, which increase their risk of dying in the hospital, a new study finds. Researchers analyzed data collected on a single day (May 8, 2007) on 13,796 patients, aged 18 and older, in 1,265 ICUs in 75 countries. They found that 51 percent of patients were classified as infected and 71 percent were receiving antibiotics for treatment or prevention of infections. read more

"Gimme, gimme, gimme!" Does EVERYONE just want a free ride? by AngelfireRN

Back when I graduated NP school, I was working for a doc who had a sample closet the size of my laundry room. Not big enough to park a yacht in, mind you, but HUGE for what it was for. Floor-to-ceiling shelves just covered in sample meds. The drug reps came by frequently, brought lunch most days, and always tried to keep us stocked. It was unreal. This doc would bag up handfuls of meds for people, usually the entire stock of what had just been delivered, and hand it off. I was amazed at how nice this seemed, but whan I got into the workings of it, I was appalled. read more

Not a doctor but is asking to be called "Dr" while on the unit. by caringnursenj

The patient (who used to be a doctor) asks in a nice manner that she be called Dr. so and so while in the unit. But apparently, she lost her license recently, and with the way she acts, she thinks that the staff on the floor doesn’t know about her license being revoked recently. How would you handle the situation? What will you tell her? read more

Is it ever appropriate to tell someone... by dinah77

Not to go into nursing? If so, how? here's my dillemma ... I work in my school's tutor center- I see a LOT Of people who are barely making it through pre-reqs, have to re-take them as many times as is allowed, etc. I'm not making judgement's about their intelligence, 99% of the time it's a lack of commitment on their part, not willing to put foth the work, etc. All they seem to see is that this is a job that pays well and is stable, etc. read more

Accept Regis or wait for UCD? by roxyr82

Well I just found out that I was accepted into Regis's accelerated BSN program for May 2010. Now I am having a tough time deciding what to do. If Regis and UCD were both priced the same I would definitely choose Regis as I believe it fits my needs and goals the best. However...Regis will cost $37,000 as opposed to $22,000.

My biggest fear is that I accept Regis, graduate $57,000 in debt, and have trouble finding a job. I have read the horror stories about new grads sending out 100s of applications without even an interview. I would love to hear from graduates of these programs and people working in CO hospitals now. read more
