Brian's Notes

With the recent Swine Flu news, we decided to create a new Pandemic Flu Discussion forum, where nurses can discuss and share news on the Swine Flu and other Pandemic issues. You will also find CDC Swine Flu updates and guidelines.

Will you work during a pandemic? Currently, less than 50% of nurses say that they would work during a pandemic. Do you feel properly trained? Do you feel that your facility has the proper safety equipment for you?

Inmates as Patients in Hospital

by 4cas2

An issue arose at my hospital during my consolidation as a student, and it had both ethical and legal concerns. I was being trained on a medical/surgical floor, and one of the nurses on the floor believed that inmates were only permitted to ambulate on the floor with their guards after visiting hours were over. Inmates are commonly put on our floor as there are a couple of prisons in the vicinity of the hospital.

Postpartum Mood Disorders

by Elvish

The postpartum period - just after giving birth - is, for most a time of happiness and adjustment to new family roles. However, for some women it is a time of overwhelming sadness, anxiety, and inability to cope with the stressors at hand. Postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis are mood disorders that affect approximately 10-20% of new moms.

Terrible clinical day, nurses don't seem to care.

by Koyaanisqatsi

I went into the stairwell and cried for about 5 minutes. This is not why I wanted to go into nursing. I see things like this every day, but never this bad before. Restraints! They strapped this poor woman down and wouldn't explain anything to her. I spent some of the rest of the day talking to her and trying to help her relax even though all she wanted was to get out of bed and get some water.

"The Disruptive Behavior of Doctors"

by dharmanurse

I am currently reading a book on nursing careers that talks about "the disruptive behavior of doctors." I'm sure we all have stories! Can you tell me of ways in which doctors' behaviors have made your job harder? The pundits talk about ways to improve health care. Well, one thing that would really make a huge difference: changing doctors' behaviors.

Student Uniform - My Gosh!

by Meg_student

The good news - I was accepted into my nursing BSN program for next semester! The bad news - we have a required white dress which is as thin as cheap drape, and the hem hits 2 inches above my knee when standing. When sitting or bending, it rides up even higher. The dress code calls for white hosiery - pantyhose or knee-highs. Knee-highs? !!! If this didn’t come from the manufacturer, I would think it could be something for Halloween! Eek!

What's your long term goal?

by nocheapones

I'm just curious what most of you are aiming for. Is it a diploma, associate's, bachelor's, master's, phd? I'm applying to diploma and associate's programs first because I want to be able to work sooner. But I definitely want to pursue a BSN after that, and then hopefully a Master's (I'm thinking Nurse Practitioner.) I know it's so early and I will undoubtedly experience things along the way that will shape me, but that's my plan for now. How about you? Anyone else thinking that far ahead? I even have the schools planned out and everything LOL.

War on the Floor

by nysvetnurse

Last night when I went into work, (a small community hospital) the charge nurse and two LPNs were actually screaming at each other, using profane language all the while patients and their families were walking right in front of where this was all taking place. In the end, the charge nurse yelled "I don't have time for this ****" and kicked a stool across the nursing station, slamming into the wall. The other nurses in the nursing station continued about their work like nothing was happening.
