Um... I don't know what an EKG is.

by 86toronado

The good thing about writing about my beginnings in the nursing field more than 2 years after the fact is that it's easy to see how far I've come. Case in point: when I started working in the hospital, my experiences in the medical field included several emergency room visits and one overnight stay as a kid, and sleeping in a chair at my grandmother's bedside the night before she died. I guess my personality sold me to the nurse manager when she hired me on as a part time unit clerk, because it certainly wasn't my medical expertise!

Active Learning Strategy: The One-Minute Paper

by VickyRN

As teachers, gauging our students' comprehension of class content can be challenging. Sadly, low scores on the first exam often serve as the wake-up call that class understanding is not where it should be. It would be much less stressful to be aware of class knowledge deficits from day one by an on-going (formative) assessment of student learning. Such a system would also create a more efficient teaching-learning environment.

My God, these family members!!

by SoundofMusic

I am just SO tired of family members not understanding what we do -- and our managers from the floor to the corporate headquarters not backing us up to explain it to them. We are simply to treat everyone as our "family members" and go above and beyond 1000 percent of the time. Who goes above and beyond FOR NURSES??? DOES ANYONE???

Nurse accuses patient of drug addiction!

by BlueHenRN

A fellow RN on my floor did something last week that continues to amaze and shock me. There was a patient admitted with pancreatitis, receiving the usual for that diagnosis: NPO, IVF, Dilaudid and Phenergen. Apparently she was asking for her meds as soon as they were due, if not sooner. Nothing new under the sun for pancreatitis. Was she drug seeking?

I wish I had studied this before Nursing 101...

by twins2005

I will be starting school in the fall & want to plan ahead, so what do you wish you had studied a little more before you started Nursing 101? I am an older student, out of school for a while & have not taken any math courses since 1992. I am brushing up on some simple algebra & math calculations, fractions & such. I have heard from some nursing students in my pre-req classes that the math was killing them, there were some recent high school grads in the mix, so I am a little nervous. Can you list here some things you wish you had known before taking your first nursing courses?

Dilemma -- any advice?

by CourtneyH

Kind of a weird situation and I don't know what to do (if anything). I'm a freshman in a 4-year Nursing program. My roommate is also in the program. The rules are you must pass A&PI (lecture + lab), A&PII (lecture + lab) and Chem (lecture + lab) with at least a C (75) by May of your first year in order to continue on in the program. Last week in conversation my roommate revealed she had gotten a C- in A&PI lecture.

1st Semester of Nursing School questions?

by hoping09

I will be starting my first semester of nursing school (at SC4) this fall. I know that all schools are different, but I was hoping that someone could tell me what there first semester schedule was like. How many days a week did you go? How long were the days? Did you start clinicals right away (I think that we do)? Where were your first clinicals (hospital or nursing home)? I'm really looking forward to beginning this chapter in my life, but at the same time I'm nervous about how I'm going to be able to juggle my family life with school. Any insight or advice would be wonderful!!
