YouTube Nurses and Nursing Students. My Top 10 List.

I have benefited from Youtube both as a Nursing student and as a RN. It has helped me to better understand ABG's (Arterial Blood Gasses), prepare for interviews, and deal with professional challenges such as time management. User discretion is advised however, whether one is posting videos or watching them it is important to respect HIPAA laws. Youtube may also be a great studying tool but it’s vital to make sure the information provided is in fact correct by cross referencing and/or asking a Professor in your Nursing program. Read More...

Am I being unrealistic? Is nursing maybe not for me?

I'm interested in nursing, but I'm picky with the department I'd like to work in. I'm really interested in L&D or mom/baby. Not that I'd refuse other units, but those are the ones that made me want to go into nursing. I'm nervous that I'm setting myself up for disappointment. I'm scared I'll get stuck working in another unit that doesn't interest me at all. I can't imagine myself cleaning old men's poo and things like that. Read More...

Ask me anything!

I just finished my first semester of an ADN nursing program, and I remember wondering what things were going to be like before I started. I'm going to start this thread so you guys can ask me anything. I'll give you a little bit of a background first: I am a mom, I do not work, and this is a second degree. I have a previous degree in Literature. I also found that I LOVE nursing. Read More...

The Reason I Became a Nurse

Nursing is and has always been a calling for me. As a young child, I remember the very first time I stepped foot in a hospital. I was 5 years old; my parents were missionary preachers and often visited ill people and their families in the hospital for spiritual services. I was often left to wait in the lobby as a child, and at the time, was not allowed in acute care areas. But that didn’t keep me from watching all the men and women in lab coats and scrub uniforms in the hospital lobby. The organized chaos and noise in a hospital environment fascinated me so much, I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up. Read More...

Why are you going the LPN route?

Just curious as why others are going the LPN route instead of straight to ASN or BSN RN? I want to be a nurse and personally can't attend a full time program. And in my area LPN was the only program that offered a part time evening class that would allow my work schedule. I'll be starting Jan 13th. Read More...

Nursing school effect on life?

I am a Medical Assistant in Urgent Care and have been for 5 years. I want to do more with life in the medical field and have decided to return to school for a BSN. I have to take 1-2 years of pre-reqs and then 2 years in a nursing program. What I want to know is do you still have a life outside of the nursing program? I hear soo many horror stories of losing friends and relationships over nursing school. Read More...

Seasonal Flu Shot Nurses / Immunization Nurses

The main task of the seasonal flu shot nurse is administering injections of the influenza (flu) vaccine. However, safely vaccinating patients against influenza incorporates a great deal more than just the physical task of giving the shot.

According to the flu.gov website, seasonal influenza (flu) activity in the United States ordinarily peaks during the winter months of January or February, but can start as early as October and be seen as late as May. Therefore, it should not be surprising that different types of entities will require the skills and services of seasonal flu shot nurses to impart their trained effort in getting through this busy time of year as smoothly as possible. HELPPP Piggyback compatibility

I have final scenario coming up in a couple of days. In the scenario, the patient has two peripheral lines: 1. KCL20 mmol/L D5W 0.45% Sodium Chloride that should infuse at 75 mL/hr and 2. Ringers Lactate continuous IV infusion for gastric loss replacement. Multi-1000 IVPB (Vitamins, multiple) should also be administered. I'm not sure where to piggyback the Multi1000, should I piggyback on KCL or LR? Why? Read More...

Anyone taking 12 plus credits while working Full-Time?

This Part-Time school thing is going too slow for me. I've been avoiding enrolling in more than 6-7 credits per semester because I had some pre-existing notion that it would be too much for me since I am working full time (mon-fri 9-5) and have a 7 year old, but I somehow feel like I may be okay. Is anyone out there taking 12 + credits while working full time and with a child/children that can reassure me that it may not be so bad? Read More...
