A little Paper on Nursing Theory and Application

As a student nurse, I am just beginning to establish my personal philosophy of nursing. During my study of nursing theory, I will be able to integrate broad concepts from a variety of theories to identify what my future practice might comprise. I selected Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Model to explore here as I anticipate it will be useful to my practice. Nightingale was a pioneer in the development of modern nursing. It was her attention to the fundamental human needs in her model that I admire and hope to incorporate in my care. Read More...

10 Things You Should Know About the First Semester of Nursing School

1) Even if your family says they understand, they really don't. You may as well tell them, and your friends too, that you are being deployed for 2-4 years, depending on your program. Because you will be MIA every. single. weekend. And most nights too.

2) Buy stock in Georgia Pacific. Because... Read More...

Got to use my neuro skills in real life!

My husband plays hockey, and last night I was at his game when one of his teammates had a hard fall onto the ice. There were only a few of us in the stands watching, and I heard one of the players going to the opposing team's side asking if anyone was an EMT or a doctor. No one seemed to have any idea what to do and no one had medical training, so I jumped up and walked toward the ice. Read More...

Everyone Won't Succeed. And That's Okay!

Not everyone succeeds in the realm of higher education. This is not necessarily a bad thing because our society still needs people whose occupations do not require any college education. Some people stumble in the race to success due to a lack of effort, whereas other individuals seem to have the odds perpetually stacked against them. Read More...

Does anyone enjoy Nursing School?

I have been recently accepted into a ADN nursing program and am very eager to get started. I attended my orientation and was thoroughly disappointed. It seems all of the comments and information provided was so negative. Listen, I am not blind to the fact that Nursing School is HARD work. I understand it will take a lot of studying and time away from my family. I know I can expect to probably make B's instead of the A's I have made thus far and that's okay.

It just seems that most of these posts are so negative. Is it really that bad? I feel if I manage my time correctly and study what I need to I will be okay. I didn't say I will be at the top of the dean's list but I will manage. I really feel discouraged about the whole process at this point. Read More...

Sweating in my scrubs... yuck

Alright, my fellow nursing people, I need your expertise. I have a dilemma of sweaty sorts.

I'm a sweaty, sweaty person. Ever since puberty I've been plagued with an excessive sweat problem in the armpit areas that has caused a lot of embarrassment and severely limited my wardrobe options. I like to compare my sweating to that of a large hairy Russian man in Florida during a heat wave. Yep, it's that bad. Read More...

Would someone mind helping with a few study guide questions?

I'm a new poster and I'm in need of some assistance. I'm currently working on a take-home study guide and while I have completed most of it, I'm hung up on about nine questions. For the record, we are allowed to use any and all online resources to complete the guide. Read More...

Death Happens. Get Used To It!

Here's a truthful horoscope for you: we're all going to die!

Before we get started, ask yourselves the following question: What exactly is it about death and dying that disturbs you? Once you pinpoint the source of your fears, keep in mind that other people who once had the same reservations have moved on to become stellar nurses with solid careers in the nursing profession. If you cannot identify what it is about death that makes you fearful, that’s also okay. It’s probably a sign of our modern times. Let me explain further. Read More

A&P II and Microbiology...At The Same Time! (oh my)

I'm sure this topic has been posted many, many times before, but I just wanted to see who is taking both A&P II and Microbiology next semester. Are you taking just these two classes, or do you plan to take others with them? How do you feel about taking two sciences at once, and what is your "plan of attack"? Read More...
