My Experience With The Four-Day Live Hurst Review For NCLEX

The intended purpose of this article is to describe my personal experiences with the four-day live Hurst Review. Although I attended more than two years ago, I recall my experience with much positivity and would recommend this review to anyone who needs help with learning nursing content. Read More...

Advice to New Nursing Students

Have you ever fallen in love? If it was anything like when I started to feel something for my husband, you were nervous as all hell. I wanted everything to go right. And, any misstep or problem was a catastrophe. If he didn't return a call quick enough, I thought "maybe he doesn't really like me" or "maybe there is someone else he'd rather be with".

Nursing school and a career in nursing are like falling in love. The moment that you become secure enough in yourself and your relationship with it... Read More...

The rolling backpack debate

I guess what's stopping me, is that I have classes with 80+ people and I haven't seen one wheelie bag. 95% of my classmates are young, and I'm 35. I already feel a touch out of place and I know it doesn't matter what they think...but how in the world are they carrying this stuff around without walking all hunched over? Is it just me being "older" and out of shape? All I had today was two notebooks, laptop, and my fundamental text and it's killing my back. I guess I could arrange to trade bringing in books with a classmate, but I'd still be stuck bringing them sometimes.  So should I just risk being the oddball for my comfort and to save my back? Do you make friends with others in your nursing program?

I find it hard to relate to others and sit in class listening to giggling and teenage conversations about parties behind me.  The other 1% of students are in their 40's who are married and have children. I feel as though I can't relate to anyone and therefore can't really make friends with anyone. By friends I mean people to have for mutual support through nursing school.  Does anyone else have this issue? Read More...

Not willing to do the dirty work?

I was talking to my girl friend and apparantly the new RN interns at the hospital dont want to do the basic cna stuff. This includes wiping butts, showering patients etc etc. Thoughts on this? I was pretty annoyed with what she told me. I got my cna and busted my butt off in clinicals ( I was the only male out of a class of 18 so I had to do my best) but its really annoying. According to there logic "They're RN's so they SHOULDNT do the jobs that the CNA do"  Read More...

Nurses: Oppression Can Stop With You

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines oppression as unjust or cruel exercise of authority or power. Due to its position on the social ladder combined with the sometimes unprofessional behaviors of its members, nursing is an oppressed occupation. According to Whitehead (2010), the position of nursing within the socioeconomic framework is one of a relatively oppressed group – not as low in the social scale as some, but certainly not in the upper professional tier.

Oppressed people tend to lash out at each other as the result of a strong sense of displaced anger along with an overall lack of group empowerment. Many nurses are truly upset at their superiors and 'the system,' but end up displacing the anger onto their much less-threatening coworkers and subordinates.  Read More...

First day done. I am excited, and a little overwhelmed

Today was day one of my BSN program. I have worked for years to get here. I am excited to actually feel like I am "becoming a nurse" finally. But WHOA...the quantity of scheduling info and syllabi and just the MASSIVE amount of details was pretty intense. Anyone else just start? How are you feeling? I'm the strangest combination of happy/excited and utterly terrified! Read More...

Do you keep your personal life private while in nursing school?

Do you keep your personal wherabouts to yourself--such as if you have a family, if you work, etc? I've learned to not reveal much to myself because there seems to be other students who get quite bitter or jealous that someone else...

First week of Nursing School and I am off to a bad start...Help!

I am already off to a bad start. I need advice to help me get on track fast. Nursing school started last week and the day after it started I had a family tragedy when my brother comitted suicide. So dealing with this and the funeral has gotten me off track and has kept me from getting ANYTHING done. I know we just started but I am panicking because I am already behind. I cannot focus myself at the moment and I am asking for some help to point me in the right direction. Any suggestions? Read More...

I want a good experience in orientation!

I am looking for input from new nurses or almost-new nurses on what would make you feel welcome to a nursing unit as a new hire and a new grad? I want to make this a positive experience for new grads, so what would you like to happen when orienting to a new unit? What welcome gifts would be nice?
What is a good way to socialize you into the new unit? Read More...
