Keeping the End in Mind

After going through my first semester in nursing school (now in my second), I've realized that not a lot of students are keeping the end in mind. What I mean by this, nursing students have become so stressed about "getting the A" instead of saying, "I need this knowledge for NCLEX" or "I want to learn so I can become a better nurse to provide the best care for my patients." And unfortunately, we won't always get the "A," but that's just fine. Read More...

Why NOT private??

I've been on this forum for sometime now and read a lot of threads about how competitive nursing programs are and people are staying on a waitlists and are willing to travel miles and miles from home to any college they get in. I have a question, why is that? Are you only considering public schools that have huge wait lists? Why not go into private school? Read More...

Males asking for female patients?

In my lab yesterday, one of the instructors was talking about having a female assist if a male has to perform a procedure which a female patient might potentially be uncomfortable with. She then said something about males requesting females, and I was a bit taken aback. She didn't seem to think like it was a very big deal. Females, how would you feel about caring for such a patient? Males? Read More...

What should we be doing by last clinical?

I'm set to graduate in 2 months and am in my final clinical rotation in oncology. I have yet to start an IV or foley, change dressing, do teaching, suction a trach, draw blood, put in an NG or any of the skills we've been tested out in other than giving meds. I don't mind doing these things but we're starting to feel that we're not actually learning ANYTHING in clinical. Isn't that the whole idea? Is this common? Read More...

Transitions: On becoming a nursing student

We are no longer dreaming, applying, and simply taking prerequisites. As nursing school acceptance letters and emails begin arriving, thousands of individuals' lives step into a new, transitional stage in their lives: pre-nursing student status. We stand on the threshold between the worlds of "hopeful" and "nursing student." And because of where we are, we have the clear vision of what it has taken for us to get this close to our dream of nursing school and yet somewhat blissfully unaware of truly knowing all that lies ahead. This is an open letter to those who will teach, mentor, and preceptor us. Read More...

Do nursing schools have to provide health insurance to students?

I had an injury today at the clinical site. I have my own health insurance. I went to an urgent care facility to get my baseline drawn and get treatment. Well the manager there was saying that the school is supposed to provide me with my health insurance and cover me at the facility site they are sending me out to. As in I am not supposed to have my own separate health insurance to pay for things like injuries at the clinical site. If someone could enlighten me I would really appreciate it. Read More...

The Admission Process: Make sure you actually say something of importance!

If you don't put in the details, how is anyone else supposed to follow your work and pick things up on the next shift? This article is about how clear expectations need to be set. Your admission is the first procedure the resident or patient experiences in your facility. Make it worth your while as well as their time. Read More...

Feeling Discouraged

I'm currently taking my pre reqs and I plan on applying to my program of choice this fall. I know that in my heart I want to be a nurse. But I seem to have a problem with staying focused when it comes to completing my work and studying for my exams. I'm not exactly sure what it is that distracts me, or why sometimes I just lose faith in myself. I know I need to get it together. I just need some encouragement and advice. Read More...

Rule of thumb on asking questions in clinicals..or new job orientation

Is there a 'Rule of thumb' in asking questions while in clinicals or at a new job? Do I look it up first in a manual/then ask if I cannot find what I am looking for or vice versa? Or neither? Sometimes people/coworkers etc... seem to give an attitude or not answer and not care.. I would like to do clinicals the right way at some point. It was every man for himself at my last job, and if I made a mistake I was punished... Read More
