Failed my 1st Fundamentals Exam

Wow! I couldn't believe it...I really was shocked. I prepared and studied, that is all I do. Just last semester I was President's List! In fact just got my certificate in the mail, and don't even feel worthy to hang it. Here's the thing...

I knew the topics the test was talking about. I understood them and I felt prepared. So for me that is the scariest thing of all. There are no words to describe how I feel because class avg was 78% and I got 70. I feel so inadequate, and I want this so bad. I have been praying that this is for me, because this is all I have ever wanted. Read More...

Is this typical of a nursing school? Arbitrary failings, and discrimination

In my school a fairly large number of students, including me, have been failed in our clinical courses by arbitrary decisions made by instructors. By "arbitrary decisions" I mean that the instructors are given unrestricted power to fail students without the use of predetermined standards. Read More...

Help with Arterial Blood Gases

I need help in understanding this one ABG problem. I understand why something is a respiratory or metabolic cause. For the questions that that have both the CO2 and HCO3 going in the same direction, I am still confused. For example: pH is 7.33, PaCO2 is 34, HCO3 is 27, and PO2 is 96. The answer is Metabolic acidosis; partially compensated.
Why is it a metabolic cause rather than a respiratory cause? Read More...

Hurts Review

My qbank scores 78,82, 84,90,88/125 not percent. I am wondering if anyone else has had similar scores and if so did you pass the nclex. My exam is very very soon and I'm just not sure if I can retain anything further. I feel like the more I study the more I forget. Read More...

10 Things to Keep in Mind While Preparing for Nursing Exams

The NCLEX is probably the single most important step towards becoming a nurse. Any aspiring nurse should start preparing for the NCLEX long before the actual test date – years before, as soon as he or she decides to take up nursing. The NCLEX, like most if not all, major tests, is designed to test the baseline knowledge of its takers, and as such, working hard throughout nursing school should ensure that the knowledge needed to pass it is already mostly there by the time it is time to take it. "We're not here for that"

Today while in clinicals I saw a fellow nursing student standing in the hallway outside a patient's room. I asked her what was up and she said, "This patient had an accident and is a mess. The NAC said she would be here in 10 minutes and it's been 15 minutes." I told her that we were allowed to provide that kind of care to any patient on the floor and it didn't have to be our patient. Her response, "We are nursing students, we are not here for that." I was taken aback. I didn't say anything to her and just went into the room... Read More...

"Many of your classmates will not be nurses"

If you haven't seen it yet, nervousnursehopeful has a thought-provoking post about their first month in nursing school. What I've Learned in My First Month of Nursing School. Yesterday was the last day of classes in my second trimester. The post got me mulling over some of the lessons I have learned in my first 6 months. For reference, my school does trimesters, and a BSN = 9 trimesters. Here are some things I have learned so far... Read More...

Pulse heard over RUQ & LUQ?

When listening for bowel sounds, a loud pulse was heard over the RUQ & the LUQ, but is not heard in either of the lower quadrants of the abdomen. What could this be? Read More...

Other health professions

It seems that most clinical instructors act like drill sergeants to their students. If a student shows a slight hint of uncertainty, the instructor will think the student is not a good fit for the profession and try to fail him/her. Do you think other health related programs (Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Dentistry, Mammography ect.) have the same mentality as nursing instructors? Read More...

Pregnant and nursing school?

Is anyone else having a baby in the middle of a semester in nursing school? I just got into my main nursing courses with clinicals starting in May. I am due to have a baby in March just at the start of a new session. Luckily I take courses online and I only have to go to lab one day per week. I also work as an aid so many of the skills we are being checked off on this coming session I have done before. My professors are so great and willing to work around everything. I'm praying everything works out so I do not fall behind. Anybody else in the same situation? What are you planning to do? Are you taking a semester off? Read More

I feel like I don't know anything!

I was looking for just some input I guess. I'm an average student that came into my nursing degree with a previous degree. I'm currently in my 2nd year out of my 4 year program and I honestly just feel like I know nothing. I feel as though everyone around me knows so much more and I just sit there dumbfounded. I can sit there in the classroom ... where I thought I came in prepared.. and everyone is talking like they are already RNs... and I'm just the preschooler in comparison... Read More...
