"Prayer shows the power of hope and humility even in the face of something as bold and encompassing as death ... prayer can ground, can aid in the process of grief, can open channels of communication among people, and can make even the battiest, crotchetiest patient seem that much more human." - CheesePotato

Feminism, Nursing, and Gender

Nursing has a complicated history with sexism and feminist issues. In a time where there is an increased presence (or acknowledgement) of males and transgendered individuals in nursing, how will the assigning of these traits (being maternal, caring, selfless, tender, loving) affect their job performance and satisfaction? Does the misogyny that still lingers in nursing affect men and the LGBTQ community differently? How will the interaction between nursing and feminism change in the future? What have been your experiences with gender norms and sexism in your nursing career?

Petition to Force NP Programs to Provide Preceptors

Why is it okay for a program to take your money and not actually provide your education? It's bad for education quality, it's bad for professional perception, and it's just deplorable. I would like to start a petition to the AACN/CCNE asking them to require NP programs to set up clinical rotations for students in order to gain accreditation. Would anyone be willing to sign this petition?

Anyone been asked inappropriate interview questions?

I had an interview at a LTC facility. The interview was going great and she asked "Do you have kids?" I had to keep my jaw from dropping. I stammered, "no..." She then asked, "Are kids in your near future?" COME ON! Isn't this illegal?

Anyone else had a poor interview experience??

Not all nurses wear scrubs

I was offered a nurse reviewer position that will allow me to do what I know plus utilize my license as I pursue my RN. While celebrating my achievements I have encountered a few comments that I would like to share:

"Oh so you aren’t really going to be a nurse?"
"Why would you go to school for nursing to not use it?"
"Aren’t you going backward?"

We are taught from the beginning of school that nursing is no longer a singular occupation and there are so many options to explore. So for anyone else who has made the decision to make the jump to be a non-clinical nurse I ask if you too have encountered this type of negativity and how you responded to it?

Direct Loan Consolidating Question

I have some student loans I want to consolidate. I understand that after doing 120 payments I could qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program since I will be and have been working in a medically underserved area.

What option/Lender do I chose under the Direct Loan Consolidation Program to be able to apply or be eligible for PSLF?

How to prevent burnout...

I've been doing ER for a while. My issue lately has been the lack of quality nurses that are being hired. Many with no ER experience, or very little, or just floor experience. I try to find redeeming qualities, but when the majority of those around you make you fearful for those patients, I wonder what to do.

Water based lubricants moisturizers?

I realize it is common practice to use surgilube and similar products to moisturize/protect patient's lips when they are on oxygen. I have always questioned this as these products are intended only as lubricants and basically just dry out. I am just wondering if anyone else agrees that placing water based lubricants on the patient's lips is really doing no good whatsoever. It seems more reasonable to use a product that is intended as a moisturizer. Any opinions?
