Importance of Continuing Education in the Nursing Profession

The importance of continued education with any profession is paramount. Within the Nursing profession it is a requirement. In general, to maintain your license you need twenty-four continuing education credits (CEU's) every two years. This article will discuss, and hopefully motivate us to go above and beyond that requirement so that we may be able to take better care of our patients. In fact, one could argue that our patients will be safer due to the increased skill this knowledge will create. Read More

Septic shock and reaction to Rocephin/Ceftriaxone

We had a code blue on our nursing floor. A peds pt was just admitted from the ED with fever and emesis. MD ordered IV Rocephin/Ceftriaxone. Pt was alert, oriented, playing but as soon as the Cef was done infusing she dropped back in her bed, non responsive, pale pale pale, diaphoretic, fever... Read More

Thank you to the amazing preceptors

I've seen so many posts about the "preceptor from hell", but I wanted to make sure that the amazing preceptors get their credit as well. I just wanted to thank all the nurses who put forth a lot of effort and time to help the new and clueless nurses like myself get to a place of being able to provide competent nursing care. I graduated this past May and began working in July with an excellent nurse who was very reluctant to precept me....she didn't like "bossing people around", but I desperately needed and was glad for all the direction she gave me. A feeling of impending doom

Disaster is on the horizon. We have new grads orienting, once they finish their orientation they are being given an orientee to train. They took away preceptor pay and with our floor being so short staffed, there simply is not anyone willing to train anyone. I love new grads. I love them, they are positive and full of hope and knowledge. But they don't know what they don't know and should be learning not teaching. Read More

JCAHO Requirement

The Joint Commission is visiting us this week. Seems they are telling us we now have to provide a pill splitter for every patient. I guess I understand the reasoning behind it but this seems a little excessive. Why not put the effort into education about cleaning it between uses. How does your facility handle this? Read More

Top 10 Reasons We Get Fired!

Unless you are wrapped in cotton wool and live in a fantasy world, we have all experienced or know somebody who has experienced problems at work. Sometimes the situation is self-made and sometimes the situation is pure and simple harassment or bullying. No matter what part of the country you work, if they want to get rid of you they will. You cannot imagine how easy it is to find mistakes and reasons to fire somebody, or to place people in situations where they shoot themselves in the foot or they volunteer to step down or move on. How to not feel embarrassed or dumb when you dont know a skill?

I am starting to understand from other posts that you learn on the job as you go. The nurse manager that hired me is extremely warm and friendly, encouraging me not to be nervous but I can't help it. When I get nervous I get red-faced and feel like an idiot when I have to say "I Don't know" or "I have never done that". Any advice? How do you make that feeling go away? Read More

Have a Sense of Humor!

Some words to live by if you are a nurse! Many people wouldn't laugh at/agree with some of the things we talk about but it is what keeps us going through the day. Sometimes in nursing one HAS to laugh to keep from crying. What are your thoughts about the statement in the picture? Share comments below! Read More

Therapeutic rationale for saline bag stapled to pt's leg?!?

A few weeks ago I had a young patient admitted for an infected upper thigh wound which occurred after the patient had jumped over a fence and cut himself. The injury was quite serious and required a skin graft that was placed at an outside hospital. After the graft was placed, the physician cut up a saline bag and stapled it to the patients leg! Any thoughts fellow nurses? Read More
