Nursing Union

Why is unionization a subject of taboo?

I work on a busy telemetry floor in Florida. Most days/nights (I work both) I am running around like crazy trying to get everything done with minimal time to take a break, go to lunch, or go to the bathroom. Pay is not that great and I feel as if upper mgmt continuously send patients that are not appropriate acuity for our floor. We are staffed 5:1 and have rapid responses/codes daily and are always shipping people off to the ICU for higher level of care. Also, our charge nurse usually takes patients and we are usually also short staffed a tech leaving the individual RN to fend for ourselves.

I know it is like this everywhere (at least on telemetry units)....sooooo why aren't nurses banding together to stop this? Why is it such taboo to talk about starting a nursing union in Florida (or in other states for that matter)?

Nursing Article

Step away from the old nurse!

Now realizing I am the old white haired nurse how attitudes have changed from my young fledgling nurse days when respect was a given, to attitudes shown today reflected in my articles by some funny/sometimes distasteful situations encountered in the past few years.

Health and Stress Management

Always waiting for the other shoe to drop aka being happy makes one unhappy?

Is it possible that when something good happens, that instead of enjoying it and being able to be happy and see all the great things that will accompany the new situation, a person sees only the negative or searches for the negative?

Managing stress during shift

I need some clues from ya'll about how to manage stress during the shift! I work a med/surg floor, for us this is ICU stepdown. Usually 5-6 high acuity pts. Some shifts run okay, but many times the workload is so high, I truly feel like I am going crazy!! Lose focus, can't think and feel like I need to scream and throw things. I have literally found myself at 3 am banging on the counters in the med room to try to destress and gain focus. Do any of you have good tips on how to manage stress during the shift?

MICU and SICU Nursing

Question about BP control in your ICU

In my short time working in MICU (started as a new grad in June) I have noticed that our docs are very conservative about treating hypertension. Obviously, pts will be on whatever PO meds they are usually on for HTN and we may increase the dosage of those sometimes, but we never really treat with IV meds unless they sustain a systolic over 180 and then there is usually a PRN order for hydralazine.

I am just wondering, how does your ICU manage HTN and what are your opinions?

Regional Discussion - California

Are nurses high in demand in California?

Would it be hard for a new BSN grad to find a job at a hospital especially here in California? I wouldn't mind relocating to a different state, but I'd prefer to stay in California. And how long do RN-MSN programs usually take? I would like to become a Nurse Practitioner in the future. Are NP's in demand as well? I don't want to spend money for a nursing education and end up being having a hard time getting an RN position for a long time.
