Ten Ways To Know You're Burning Out

Most of us have been there. I know I have ... more than once. So how do nurses learn to recognize the signs that we're getting a little crispy around the edges and take measures to combat burnout, rather than wait until we're completely fried and then commit career hara-kiri? Here are a few clues I wish Viv had listened to before flaming out in such spectacular fashion...

Helping those in need in a time of war..

This is an excerpt of the time I was at a forward operating base in Afghanistan embedded with the Afghanistan Army and we had a medevac of little Afghanistan girl come in our Helicopters. Typically, the Afghanistan Army would handle "local" cases, but they were not around their Medical Clinic. We took her into our Army ambulance till we got her to the hospital.. Nursing Career Advice

Neonatal Nurse Practioners/Neonatal Nurses

I'm 17. I was supposed to be a senior in HS this year, but long story short, I got my diploma from a home school & I just started college on Monday. I'm gonna take as many prerequisites as I can before transferring to SHSU for my BSN. After that, I plan on working as an RN for 2 years before applying to a graduate school to get my Masters in Neonatal Nursing. My ultimate long term goal is to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.

I have some questions for all the NP's & NNP's out there, so please please please take the time to answer, because it would mean the world to me to get some advice from the women (and men) who are in this field.

Why does this stigma exist in relation to new nurses?

I am really confused by the stigma and negative attitude towards new nurses from experienced nurses as I am a new nurse and just plain do not understand? Aren't we all new nurses at one time, so why are "some" nurses (as I do not think it is an all inclusive thing) forgetful that they were once the person whom they reject or whatever they do? I am unclear on the reality of what transpires in reality, I just know what I hear and what I have gone through myself.

How did you find out about allnurses.com?

As I'm looking at how many members and guests are online, I was wondering how you all found out about this website. I found allnurses.com when I was googling for help with my math problem while in my first semester in nursing school. Ever since, allnurses had been my companion throughout my nursing journey and introduced this website to friends and co-workers as well.

How to make ends meet during nursing school?

At 35yo, I've decided to make the career change from a comfortable, secure, well-paying job in marketing to nursing. I have a BS, but will soon be resigning to pursue a BSN.

I've recently sold my home, so I no longer have a mortgage. Before I begin school, I intend to buy a reliable car outright in cash so I won't have a car payment. I have no debt, other than my previous student loan (which I believe I can defer while I'm a student). With that said, there will still be regular living expenses like rent, electricity, food, gas, car insurance, phone, etc.

Regional Discussion - New York

Am I being cheated out of my money?

I am a freshman at Alverno College in Milwaukee, WI and Nursing is my major. I would really like to become a CNA to start off and get a feel for the hospital environment. The accredited CNA programs are quite expensive, and I don't have the money to pay for it. Are there any programs in Milwaukee that anyone here from Wisconsin knows of that will help me pay for most or all of CNA course tuition? Anyone know of any grants or scholarships I can look into?
