Nurses are bad..don't be a nurse!

Before pursuing nursing as a career, I had a bad impression of nurses from what I had heard but I never propagated it. A couple of years ago when my grandmother had a knee surgery, I got a chance to look closely into how nurses provide care and communicate with patients and their family. I noticed how therapeutically the nurses talked to my grandmother. They explained everything so well and even answered the relevant questions I asked out of curiosity. Never before this episode did I ever want to be a nurse.

Healthcare, Customer Service, Real Life and a little help from Mel Gibson

Shortly after having a nice dinner with a couple friends I have not seen for some time, I found myself pondering the flaws in the assertion that healthcare must be "customer service" oriented. My friends, both of whom are, through no fault of their own, only marginally aware of the problems facing healthcare, both insist the push for better "customer service" in healthcare is long overdue.

Funny ways little kids describe how babies are born

I'm wondering if any of you in your experience of nursing (or even LIFE, for that matter) ever heard a little one describe how their little sibling (or cousin, family friend, etc.) was going to come into this world? Here's my quick story...

Debts are the Whips and Shackles That Will Enslave You

The truth out there is that for the most part with rare exceptions, Hospitals don't care where you went to school. Taking out tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt to get a "designer" degree will not make you more competetive. It will however limit your opportunities because you have to generate a siginificant cash flow in order to pay off your debt.

Just a reminder to watch what you say!

I have a page on a social network site. Mentioned that I had a bad night, for three nights. Recently, I got called into my boss's office. There were COPIES of my page sitting on the desk. I was told to watch what I say, because by saying I had a bad night, it was bad for the company image. Then I was told that my page would be monitered closely for the next few months I went home and immediately upped my privacy settings to and took down my place of employment. I felt completely violated.

Student Nursing

Community College? You must be stupid.

I was talking about the classes I'll be taking this fall at my local community college (one of which is chemistry which I'm a little nervous about since I've never had a chemistry class before) with my wonderful bachelor's degree holding partner who, in an attempt to ease my anxiety makes the comment "Well, it's just at a community college so the class should be pretty easy." Wrong thing to say honey...

Cover Letter Advice Please

I am about to graduate nursing school in August with my BSN. I want to work in Baltimore. I have already submitted applications to positions at Sinai, Northwest, and UMMC. I feel like my resume is good, but I'm not sure about my cover letter. I feel like its too long and/or maybe not saying what the hospitals want. In Leadership, we were told to have 4 paragraphs. First paragraph details the position you are applying for and specific knowledge you have of the hospital. Second paragraph outlines your qualifications. Third paragraph has more background info about your self. And fourth paragraph thanks the reader and gives your contact info.

In my third paragraph, I decided to be a little unconventional...
