Rubrics and Their Many Uses

What is a rubric and why is this performance-based assessment a valuable component of the nurse educator's toolbox?

Steel Magnolias and Sweet Memories

A morning spent in a beauty parlor with other 'women of a certain age' reminds an AL community nurse that a stethoscope and a BP cuff are often the *least* important components of a good nursing assessment.

Shorter Door-In to Door-Out Time Tied to Better Outcomes

A door-in to door-out time of 30 minutes or less for patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, transferred for primary percutaneous coronary intervention is associated with shorter reperfusion delays and reduced in-hospital mortality, according to a study published online June 22/29 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Is it just nurses or...

I always seem to see threads related to nurses not being able to obtain jobs. Are nurses the only major HEALTH profession facing this issue? All my friends who have graduated pharmacy school were able to obtain jobs. In fact, all had multiple job offers!

My neighbor's daughter graduated school and is an occupational therapist and she said that she and all of the others who graduated as therapists were also able to obtain jobs. Is it just nurses who are having a hard time finding employment?

Funny things lay-people say...

I was walking through the hallway today and a family member of one of our patient's was talking on their cellphone-- apparently giving an update to someone about the patient. This is what I hear: "Well, no, he's not very awake today. I think they seduced him while they did a procedure."

If I had milk in my mouth at the time, it would have come out my nose!!!

We do a lot of things in the ICU, but seducing is not one of them!

OK, now it's your turn! What crazy things have you heard?

Getting overpaid. Should I tell payroll?

I am a student nurse for the summer at a summer camp, and just received my first paycheck. It seems like they are significantly overpaying me each week from our initial agreement. On one hand, I feel like I should tell payroll because they are probably going to realize their mistake eventually and be disappointed that I wasn't up front about it. On the other hand, I'm thinking maybe God just wants me to have some extra fun this summer, and of course I could put the money to good use! What should i do?!

How to NOT gain weight in Nursing School?

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for new to nursing school students on how to not gain weight in nursing school? We were told at orientation that we should expect to gain weight. I am already struggling with keeping the numbers on the scale in an acceptable range. I know life will be crazy but I really don't want to gain another 20 lbs.

Regional Discussion - Missouri

Moving to St Louis, MO. HELP!

I am an ER/trauma (CEN) nurse with 3.5 years experience and my husband and I are moving to St Louis in the next few months to be closer to family. I would appreciate any information on the hospitals there, especially from former or current employees. I would like to know stuff like the ER patient ratios, salary, benefits, administrative support, turnover rates and really anything you want to add. Also, if there are any agency nurses in that area, I would like to know about that as well.

AND... while I am at it... my husband is a paramedic... anything you can tell me that he needs to know?
