As a school nurse, a lot of people (including many other nurses) ask me what I do all day and I never really know what to tell them. Because, you see, every minute of every day is very different. You can go from putting on a Band-Aid to a life threatening allergic reaction in the space of mere minutes. You can go from a lice screening to treating a four year old diabetic who “can’t feel his legs” in a matter of moments.

When I studied Acting years ago, one of the exercises that we had to do was to pick an animal that we identified mostly with and to emulate it. What I would like to know is what medical instrument or medicine would you be and why?

Fifteen percent of U.S. nursing homes receive deficiency citations each year for infection control, and this may be associated with low staffing levels, according to a study published in the May issue of the American Journal of Infection Control.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I had 3 things I wanted to be: A nurse, a scientist, and a special education teacher. I cannot remember a time in my life where I wanted to be something different.

I'm kind of all 3 I did a lot of work with special needs people as a nurse. The scientist part comes through with using your nursing judgement and trying to put the pieces together with the Dr. to make a clear diagnosis...

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. It seems to me that whenever there is a debate here on allnurses.com, there are three predictable "red herrings" that get tossed into the mix. For those that don't know, a red herring is an element that distracts attention away from the real argument. There may be more, but these top three are the ones I have noticed the most. Perhaps others have more to add to the list! Feel free!

How to apply for IL NCLEX from out of state?

I want to take the NCLEX for IL and NY (where I've already applied) at the same time. I've called the number for IL I was given where there was no answer in the "NCLEX" department so I had to leave a voice mail. They never returned my call. Does anybody know how to apply to sit for the NCLEX from out of state and if you can sit for two states at once? Thanks for your help!
