Nursing Blogs
I am an OB nurse; I do mother/baby, newborn nursery, and high-risk antepartum nursing. I'm used to being the one in control. I'm used to doing the teaching, reading the monitor strips, and reassuring the fears of many an anxious mama (pregnant or delivered). That's where I'm 'in the zone'. Give me a 35-weeker feeder/grower, give me an antepartum mama in preterm labor, give me someone who needs that kind of help, and I am good to go. What I am not used to, however, is when the tables are turned and it's me in the hot seat!
Success Nursing Stories
I was called to a RRT (Rapid Response Team) where the nurse caring for the pt stated that they were having CVA Sx. We all arrived and sure enough, one pupil was large, flaccid on the left, slurred speech, and pt went from A & O x3 to totally disoriented...

It was meant to be sarcastic and humorous. Well, long story short, HR got a hold of it and almost fired me for it. They said it made me look like a cold, callous nurse and that doesn't sit well with their core values as a facility...
I was talking to a family member today. He is a very nice guy and told me how much he used to want to be a psych nurse many years ago. He told me the reason why he changed his mind is because of the stigma that all male nurses are gay. This guy now knows that he made a very immature decision that he now regrets. I think he would of made an awesome nurse but...
Clinical News
People with HIV may be able to reduce the risk of transmitting the infection to sexual partners by starting an antiretroviral regimen early, while their immune systems are healthy, according the results of the HPTN 052 trial, sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The trial was slated to end in 2015, but the findings are being released early after a scheduled interim data review by an independent data and safety monitoring board.
Student Discussions
Is it possible (legal) for a student nurse to administer medication without supervision of the preceptor nurse or the clinical instructor?
Well, I just finished my first year of nursing school and decided I'd share some insights on how to survive this oh-so-feared first year. Please feel free to contribute from your experiences!
