Just Another Manic Monday

Twenty minutes after walking through the front door at work on a wintry Monday morning, I found a resident stone-cold dead in her bed. And that was just the beginning of the festivities...

Precepting the Preceptor

Very few institutions expend the resources to teach their preceptors how to precept. Here are some of the things I've learned.

Public Sector Plays Big Role in Drug Research

Public-sector research institutions (PSRIs) appear to play a bigger role in drug discovery than was previously thought, contributing to the discovery of about 10 to 20 percent of drugs approved for new drug applications since 1990, according to research published in the Feb. 10 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Most Annoying Nursing Stereotype

What is the most annoying stereotype that you have directly come across. We all know the naughty nurse one. I'm talking more along the lines of, what have you personally had to deal with?

Things you'd LOVE to tell coworkers...and get away with it!

Please don't label this thread "negative". It is meant to be fun...

Nursing Application Photos: Discrimination or Not

During my recent job hunt in the nursing field, I decided to contact a recruiter to help me with my application and "getting my name out there," so to speak. I worked with her for a few months trying to find jobs in clinics and doctor's offices across the Atlanta area, when after a few weeks she asked if I could send her a picture of myself to attach to my resume because the hiring agencies wanted to see what I looked like before an interview or further evaluation. My questions...

NOT going to the pinning ceremony

I have a previous degree, so going to some special occasion AND graduation is not something I'm interested in. I just want to go to graduation to get up on stage, grab my fake diploma, and walk away!

Ever had a nursing instructor hate you?

Heeeey, so I'm in a weird situation. I just started my beginning nursing fundamentals class, of which I have enjoyed and been excited. We start clinicals at a nursing home in about two weeks! I'm always 15-30 minutes early to this class, which is 6 hours long and no break 3 days a week...

I almost got kicked out of my program from ONE mistake!

Today, I was called to the directors office and had to recall the incident. I confessed the truth to what had happened and was told in lieu of dismissal, I had to write a paper on the Patient Safety Goals and was suspended from attending this weeks clinical, which I think is a fair punishment.

I just had to get this out so it's not stuck on my head all semester. The only thing I'm worried about is this somehow biting in the butt in the long run... which something tells me it will.

MGH is offering new grad ICU internship for $11.44 an hour?

I was cruising the hospital websites as I do everyday as a new grad and came across this:

The Department of Nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital is running a New Graduate RN ICU Residency Program for six months from April 2011 to September 2011. RN residents will be hired and trained to work successfully in an intensive care setting.

RN Residents will be eligible for benefits and paid a salary of $11.44 per hour. The schedule will be 40 hours per week with five 8-hour shifts. Day/Night rotation with weekends and holidays required.

11.44 an hour? They can't be serious...can they?
