A few nuggets of wisdom gleaned from years of nursing and even more years of living. After all---there's gotta be SOMETHING that compensates for all these wrinkles, right?

New grad/bad economy, bend over and take it?

I'm writing to you all because I don't know how to go from here. Do I pretend that I'm all about the night shift and this is my first choice or do I go the open and honest route and express that while the night shift is not my first choice, I'm willing to give it a shot for at least a year (which is true)?

HELP! Social question-over the line?

Hi, I am a pedi nurse and was a primary RN for a patient for about a year and then they got discharged and went back home out of state. I became friends with the mom and the little patient. Now they are coming back to be readmitted and I would like for them to stay with me for a couple of nights prior to this, the mom asked me if this was okay. My question is: is this something I could get in trouble for? Could I lose me license?

Has anyone ever put down your career choice?

Have people ever put you down for your choice in Nursing? I was having a conversation with an old friend and we talked about school and such. When I stated I will be graduating soon this individual made a comment on how I can soon start my career in wiping peoples butt's. This person stated they were joking but it clearly was an attempt to put me down (which isnt unusual for this person).

Does anyone else get angry when people are ignorant to what nurses do?

Question for Nurses who are MOMS

  1. Do you consider Nursing a family-friendly field? Why or why not?
  2. Has your job severely impacted your family life in a negative way? If so, how?
  3. If you are a single mother to 3-5 children, has your Nursing job afforded you to take care of your kids financially as well as save for retirement?
  4. Finally, if you had to do Nursing all over again, would you? If not, what other field would you choose?

Am I being realistic? Nursing school at 45?

OK, so I need some advice. I'm very seriously considering my second career as nursing. I'm 45, and am very successful in a marketing position. I'm burned out and have always wanted to be a nurse. My background is business. I have some college level science, but I pulled my transcripts and need to take about 8 courses to get my prelims in. I'm enrolled in classes this spring, will still be working full time and am nervous about balancing work and school. My husband is very supportive, and wants me to do what makes me happy. My goal is to enroll in a masters for non-nursing in Summer of 2012. I'll graduate with a masters and can take the RN test. Am I too old to do this? I would graduate in late 2013 (six semester program) at age 48.

Would really appreciate any advice and if I can realistically have a second career at nursing at this age.

Visiting Nurses Service New Grad Internship

I am interested in applying for the VNS new grad internship that begins in April.

I called the recruiter and left a message. However, I was wondering if anyone else could give me more information about the application process. Do you know if they are still accepting applications for April?

Also, the application requires 2 letters of recommendation. Did you submit all the application materials in person?
