Medicare Act Tied to Reductions in Inappropriate ADT Use

Implementation of the Medicare Modernization Act, which led to reduced reimbursement for androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer, appears to have substantially reduced the rate at which the therapy is used for inappropriate indications, according to research published in the Nov. 4 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Yes, Virginia, There IS A Second Chance

A happy ending to the saga of a late-middle-aged nurse who finally found her dream job after months of unemployment and under-employment......just as she was beginning to wonder if she'd ever work as a nurse again.

The story is in the soil....

The story is in the soil... without the proper nutrients and water- plants can not bloom properly. And without love, friendship and a purpose- our lives would never be the sweet surrender of laughter and happiness that we find in each and every day. This is a story that has a meaning, serves a purpose and has changed my life.

Patients and the race card

I am a fairly new nurse and many of my co-workers have run into situations where a patient pulls the race card on them. This has not yet happened to me, but I'm sure with time it will. Just wondering how others have handled this type of situation and how patients have reacted.

I think I just ended someone's career

I had to report a registery LPN who was seen crushing, cutting, snorting, and then rubbing the residual powder on her gums by nearly an entire med floor. Most of her narc cards are missing several pills each. She was so intoxicated she could not stand at the cart and nearly fell over several times. She was escorted out and made the statement that she was already being investigated and was about to finish RN school. While waiting for the bosses to arrive some of the staff made it a game to shoot staples at her face...

What is your opinion on antibiotic use for acne?

I am currently working and a med-spa. The Dr. at this facility frequently prescribes antibiotics for long term use for people with acne problems. I am not sure I really agree with this considering all of the superbugs out there that we are creating due to overuse of antibiotics. Just wondering what everyone else thought of this?

Yelled at for posting on AN

I got called into my nursing instructors office and was admonished for posting online! They looked at my profile info to find out it was me. What do you all think about this? My mistake for posting or invasion of privacy?

Planning advice needed

I am hoping all of the lovely ladies and gentlemen at allnurses.com can give me some much needed career advice. As a background, I am 25, happily married for three years, live in Chicago, and went to art school for painting. I am strongly considering going into nursing as a career. This would mean doing all of my pre-reqs, probably some volunteer work to get in school, a bsn or gem program, and finally sweet sweet graduation. My husband and I are also strongly considering having kids...

Any of you make excellent grades but suck at skills?

I'm curious as to how many of you started off with really good grades but found yourself floundering and feeling awkward in lab and clinicals. I've made straight A's so far during this first semester but I feel so clumsy and unnatural with skills. I certainly have the knowledge but I become an idiot when I have to do stuff. Any tips?

Maxim in AK?

I recently saw an ad posted for LPN's and RN's through Maxim Staffing. I was wondering if anyone could tell me more about them. I am new to the area and am currently an LPN and I am considering accepting a position. Thank you!!!
