Nursing Articles
In homage to an Allnurses member who wrote a wonderful article entitled "Nurses Are So Mean", I'd like to provide excerpts from my personal blog which I wrote not to long ago. I give enormous kudos and applause to the writer of this article, and I sincerely agree. It seriously is about taking the time to evaluate your self and your actions, and the rationales for your reactions. It is about looking inward..it is ultimately about personal growth and fulfillment.
Clinical News
High mold exposure in the home may lead to an increased risk of severe asthma attacks among children with variants in the chitinase gene CHIT1, according to research published online June 10 in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

I work on a fast paced med/surg unit in a large hospital. For the most part our surgeons are great caring doctors who are easy to get along with. But we have one especially, who is a peripheral vascular surgeon, that is the most rude, degrading, loud, and angry doctor you could imagine. I mean you should hear the stuff that comes out of his mouth.
I haven't read much of her work, but what I've seen so far looks like the ravings of a schizophrenic. It looks like she rejects the medical model completely and believes in telepathy and mind reading over distances, and unmeasurable electromagnetic fields that are created when nurses care about their patients.
I was all set to head towards NP when I met a pediatric physician at starbucks yesterday who tried to tell me PA is the way to go and that NP's aren't ask knowledgeable and that just threw me for a loop. I just need to hear from people in the field if I should once again consider PA. I love working in hospitals, I would love to treat and see patients (I know I am not going to be the DR), and right now I can go either directions. Thoughts?
Student Discussions
What do you wish you were told on the first day? My students have already been through orientation, but I would love to find some great ways to break the ice and to encourage them. I want them to know that if they work hard, they can succeed. What have you been told that was helpful/encouraging? What do you wish you had been told?
I wanted to become a pediatric nurse and eventually become a CPNP, but last year when the economy tanked nursing grads were having a really hard time finding jobs. Are you all still having a hard time finding jobs? Has the school you went to or the type of degree (ADN or BSN) you have affected your job search? Do any of you think there are too many nurses out there and not enough jobs to go around?
How long did it take you (or is it currently taking you) to finish all of your prereqs? I am so tempted to want to cram all of my prereqs into 3 semesters so I can apply for Fall 2011, but the 10 credit hours I'm taking right now during the 8 week Summer session is kicking my rear!!
Regional Discussion - Oklahoma
Are there any hospitals in OKC that are paying new grads above 18-19 base pay? I really dont think the cost of living in OK is all that low compared to other places that are paying higher. Am I missing something?
