It is with a heavy heart that we announce the loss of one of our most beloved members, Daytonite. Daytonite was instrumental in working with the nursing students here at allnurses.com. She was always there for them as well as the seasoned nurse. Her love, however, was teaching those in a nursing program by leading and guiding them here at allnurses.com.
I have been a nurse for less than a year, and have not worked with students very often. As a student myself, I would have never, NEVER done this. This situation was upsetting to me. Some people I work with thought it was outrageous, and others didn't seem very surprised. I sent off an email to my manager, but have not heard back from her. I did learn a lesson to say up front what I expect when working with students.
New to allnurses, and just wanted to get some opinions. I am a new nurse (LPN), started my first week at a long term care facility. I have observed many nurses not wearing gloves while doing patient care. The nurses and aides were not wearing gloves when taking residents to the bathroom, and when drawing blood, and fingersticks. Just wondering if this was the norm where any of you work??

I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar situation as myself...Here goes: I got docked 5% of my grade because I refused to hold an incompetent group member's hand during clinicals and there seems to be no recourse. Is this what nursing school is really all about? Do I just have to bend over until I graduate? I was under the false impression that we are all responsible for ourselves and that we should be working with a group of equal peers. Silly me.
It has been painfully obvious at my school that the students that look like super models got GN jobs right away. Yeah the average looking students are starting to get job now too but they didn't land the first job they interviewed for like the good looking students did. How unfair is that. Has anyone else seen this at their school?
Do you think it's better to try to get an entry MSN and take the Nclex, than a BSN? Still would have no work experience when finished and looking for that new grad job, so would it be harder to find one with a Masters RN and no experience? or better to have it completed.

I wish I had a dollar for every post I've read claiming that "nurses are so mean," "nurses are nasty to each other," "nurses eat their young" or "my preceptor is picking on me for no good reason." And then if you add in all the nurses who are "fired for NO reason" or is hated by their co-workers because they're so much younger and more beautiful than everyone around them or just can't get along with their colleagues no matter what they do -- well, I'd be a rich woman.

Since I have decided that my first career choice was the wrong one, I would like as much information as possible before making a second career choice. The problem is this: how do I get real world information about the day-to-day practice of nursing, about specialties, about what to expect working in a hospital versus a doctor's office, etc.? I am in Houston, Texas and would plan on staying here, so although I would like any input regardless of location I would particularly appreciate any Houston RNs or NPs answering any or all of the following questions for me...
