"Mom-nesia", or, Of Pyramids and Panic

by VivaLasViejas

Mom-nesia, for the uninitiated, is a phenomenon that occurs whenever some medical crisis threatens your offspring, instantly rearranging your priorities and rendering you completely ineffective as a clinician. Like when your 17-year-old son falls off the top of a human pyramid, slams into an inch's worth of foam rubber, feels OK for the first few minutes, and then.........isn't.

No More Fingersticks for Techs!!

by pagandeva2000

Is this happening where you all are? I live/work in New York City and work in a city hospital, and in the past few months, the BON sent a mandate stating that techs, CNAs, PCAs, etc...can no longer do fingersticks...this is designated only to licensed personnel; LPNs and RNs. Now, I am hearing from other RNs working in private industry that they are still allowing their techs to do this. Last year, they just upgraded many of our CNAs to Patient Care Associates, which was supposed to include this skill, but, now, they are not allowed to.

Racist Patients

by Williss2

Our floor is culturally diverse. We have employees from all walks of life. We recently had a patient on the floor that said that he only wanted white nurses to take care if him. I'm not sure if our manager obliged, but I think that its never ok, also I personally just wouldn't think about this when I'm in pain or in need. Its crazy. Also I have been noticing that certain patients make comments to try and relate to me or assume that I know certain things because I'm AA. A patient said to me today,"My lipgloss be poppin.." singing a song that he thought he was relating to me by singing. Or a patient said to me " Do you eat collards and fried chicken". Little comments like that. I correct them and brush it off. I have too many other problems in my day to worry about this. Also, I should say that I reside in Ga. Is it just me?

Student Discussion

I think my professor is making up stuff ... not sure what to do.

by katmarie26

So, I think one of my professors is making up statements. One in particular: 90% of allergies are caused by drinking milk-based formulas to babies.

OK, so I asked her about that statistic and where I could find it. She told me it was on the AAP site. Searched 45 minutes and found nothing. Looked thru medline ... .nothing. She makes other incredulous statements... and I am beginning to think she's fabricating them (other students found alternate truths to her statements before).

What would you do? I'm thinking about going to my advisor with this.

Regional Discussion - Florida

Do you think this is a good idea? ...

by J87513

Hey all, I'm going to go to one of the community colleges here in southeastern florida starting in a month. My plan is to take english 1101 and chem1032, but after a few days in chem 1032 i'm going to drop the class but still attend. I will kind of have a "practice" class for one semester while I take my english class. So by the second time I take chem1032, for the fall semester it will be alot easier. What do you all think? I just want to get the highest gpa for my pre reqs of course.
