For Sale: Used Nurse. Dirt Cheap!

by VivaLasViejas

Life, as most of us discover at some point, is really weird sometimes. Just about the time you think you've got everything wired, the proverbial rug gets yanked out from under you and you find yourself questioning every assumption you ever had. I thought I was supposed to be ambitious. I thought I was supposed to want more responsibility, more money, more everything. I didn't. I wanted to take care of people. I wanted to be able to turn over the keys at the end of a shift and not worry about it until the next day. I wanted to do a good day's work and accomplish the goals for that day instead of always worrying about the long term. And I wanted to know my residents as people again..........not as names on a checklist.

Novice: The First Stage on Your Journey

by VickyRN

The novice stage - we've all experienced it. It's a time of stretching and rapid personal and professional growth. The stretching can be humbling and painful, as shortcomings in our performance are inevitable. If we learn from our mistakes, however, we will eventually grow to proficiency in our newly chosen role. This brings to mind a saying, "To live is to grow, and to grow is to change." If we are not experiencing any changes, then we are not growing. Growth and development are a necessary part of life.

Showtime's new series Nurse Jackie

by athena55

Okay, well I had the opportunity to go to Showtime and watch the inaugural episode of "Nurse Jackie" thinking it would be a positive portrayal of the nursing profession......NOT. The character of Nurse Jackie, starring Edie Falco, is a registered, professional nurse who abuses pain meds, steals patient property (money), hides the fact that she is in a relationship (she is married but takes off her wedding ring while at work) and has a sexual relationship with a pharmacist, all during a 12 hour shift.

Pt./Family Comments that Leave You Speechless

by janhetherington

I seem to be hearing more and more comments from patients and families that just leave me speechless. I can think of no good response except helpless laughter, which I can't indulge in, so I bite my tongue and say nothing at all. Here's two from last night...

Student Discussion

Should students be penalized due to Instructors Mistake ?

by nursing student 19

Yesterday students just found out that something was mis-keyed in the our first exam ( 6 weeks ago) so therefore some of us either lost or gained 1 point, and some people did not have any change. I was one of the lucky ones that gained 1 point so going from a 81 to 82 was no big deal to me. However, there are some that lost a point and was hanging on the borderline of failing with 1 pt making the difference. I personally feel that students should not have points deducted due to the instructor mis- keying the scan tron. I feel for those who thought they passed that exam and didn't.

Reading alot of posts discussing "A" nursing students vs "C" nursing students

by nursing student 19

It breaks my heart that there are students that are so hung up on grades that they rather want an "A" nurse taking care of them over a "C" nurse. Come on now ! When was the last time a patient asked you what your GPA was ? When was the last time as a patient yourself you asked your nurse what her GPA was ? Nursing school is stressful enough and while I strive everyday to make A's on exams I don't. I started out with A's and now I'm hanging around with high C's.

Regional Discussion - New Jersey

I would like to hear from some nurse recruiters on why no one can find a job.

by meluhn

I was just wondering what you guys are doing. I have applied to a certain large health system in NJ for a per diem position in another hospital in the same system I currently work in. With a bsn and certification in the area, I am definitely qualified. I have a stellar work history and references. I just dont understand why they are not calling.
