From First Generation College Student To Nurse

First generation college students often have educational experiences that greatly differ from those of their classmates who come from more educated families. I was one of those students who had been the first in my immediate family to complete college, and as a result, I faced issues that were unfamiliar to many of my counterparts. Today's common definition of the first-generation student is still derived from the coined definition and refers to a student who is the first in his/her family (mother, father, or siblings) to complete a college education (Payne, 2007). Nursing Fundamentals

We had our orientation for the upcoming term. Obviously the first course will be Nursing Fundamentals and I got seriously intimidated by the faculty members and graduate students. They were telling us how tough the program is and that many, many hours of studying are required to pass the course. They said approx. 40-50hours per week!! So, on top of that it doesn't include the lecture, lab, or clinical time that we have to invest into it. Also, I have to take my A&P II at the same time to get that out of the way. So, I was wondering if anyone has tips on how to study for nursing fundamentals and how you organized your time for that? Read More...

Starting nursing school in the Spring. REALLY nervous. TIPS?

The school I am going to has very high expectations, as they have had a 100% NCLEX pass rate for many years. I know several people personally who have failed out, and who have told me that the school weeds out those who they dont think will keep their 100% NCLEX rate.

I've been a CNA for years, and I AM an A average student (but the A's don't come easy, I bust my butt for them). I DID feel like I would be OK in nursing school, but everything I hear from others about this program is scaring me and making me sooooo nervous!! Read More...

Just a first semester and I think ... this isn't for me. The culture is ridiculous.

My friend is being asked to withdraw from her clinical because she had to take her daughter to the ED w/ a fever of 104.5 and she was unable to complete the full careplan

My friend is an A student - in both lecture and clinical. She is very sharp ... she puts ME to shame on skills and swift thought process.

I'm honestly beyond mad. I have grown so close to this friend and it make me want to cry that they're doing this to her. She even has hospital documentation. I just ... I don't ... I don't fully understand this. Read More...

I did a dumb thing today and learned a lesson

I confronted one of my instructors today. I was NOT very tactful in the way I handled myself. I have been bothered/annoyed by this instructor for 2 quarters now and today was our final. I received my grade and when most of the class was out of the room, I went up to him and told him he was unprofessional and a few other things. He stood up and looked down at me and told me if I didn't like it I could...

I was then told by a fellow student that if I continued to act the way I did, that I would not make a very good nurse. That I needed... Read More...

Do Nurses Earn Big Money? You Decide.

The members of the public who are convinced that nurses earn huge salaries are like shrubs on the outside looking in because they do not know how much sweat and tears we shed for our educations, and they are unaware of the hazards many of us face during the course of a day at work. Read More...

People say the funniest things in school...

Miscommunication happens more often than we like - especially while in school. Sometimes communication between teacher and students get lost. The teacher or the student ends up saying something unexpected which in turn makes everyone laugh. What have you heard or witnessed in school that was funny? Was there ever a time that something was said in class that you couldn't believe that it came out of someone's mouth? Read More...

How Many Schools Did You Apply For?

I'm almost done with my pre-nursing courses. And because nursing applications deadlines are coming closer and closer, and I was wondering how many schools I should apply for. I just don't want to only apply for a couple of schools and not get accepted, when if I applied to such-and-such school I would get accepted. I know many people don't get in on their first shot but how many different schools did you apply for before starting a nursing program? Read More...
