The Humorous Nurse Speaks

Dealing with issues such as life, death, and other matters of consequence in our daily work lives, nurses tend to develop a rather jaded---OK, warped---sense of humor. It's almost a matter of survival; otherwise, we'd probably go off the deep end. (It's not for nothing that we happen to have the best collection of "code brown" stories on the planet.) Here's a peek at a few of the things one R.N. finds irresistibly funny. Read More...

Anyone pass the NCLEX without study/preparation?

I will be finishing up finals this week. Our school tells us that we should take our exam ASAP as extra study is really not needed, as they believe the program has us well prepared. I would like to know if there are people out there that have passed with minimal preparation. Mind you, I will be studying my butt off as soon as finals are over, but I will register to take the exam as fast as possible. It's just that I read of so many people on AN that describe what I see as strenuous study regimens and I am a bit intimidated. Read More...

Select all that apply questions

I am a third semester nursing student struggling with answering the "Select all that apply" questions in my theory classes. Our instructors tell us that the NCLEX exam is using this format more frequently and they want us to be prepared. Unfortunately, these questions are dropping my test scores dramatically, because you have to get everything correct to get credit for the question! I have taken a test taking strategies class to no avail...Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Read More...

Thank you allnurses.com!

My passing was a miracle. And a big portion of that miracle are the kind people that posted in this site. Often I come home so tired from work and I want to give up my USRN dream. But clicking and reading the posts here; the kindred spirit pulled me through. I have read almost every thread in here for over a year. Clicked almost all the link posted and downloaded to print the notes shared. I followed through the "tips" shared by others that failed and pass, put them to practice -- and it did work! Have been out of school for a long time and need help! LPN review!

I graduated back in 2011 from LPN school and took my boards a few months after without studying and failed miserably. Its been almost a 1 1/2 yrs now and I need to get my butt into gear! I have been looking for review courses. I have the saunders nclex pn 5th edition and it sits on the back of my couch because I hate books! I have heard of a few online review courses. Kaplan, Hurst, and I can't remember the others now lol. I am a bit confused with kaplan . There is the Kaplan Review Anywhere Classroom for $399 and then the Kaplan Qbank with review book for $129. I'm not sure which would be better for me...I also want some suggestions to which you guys have used and what worked best for you. Read More...

If you didn't document, you didn't do it!

Documentation is a minefield that we have to tread very carefully. One wrong step and it could blow up in our face. Computer charting has simplified our process. The little check boxes allow us to say if we did or didn't do a certain task. It is easy but how many of us really document everything we do? Read More...

Does anyone know a good study book or tool to study for the NCLEX?

I'm having trouble trying to study for my upcoming NCLEX exam. So far I've tried Exam Cram, and ATI Testing books. None of them have worked so far. I'm wondering if there is something that can be simple and less confusing. If one of you kind souls can supply me with a book like this could you please tell me? Thanks in advance!! Read More...

Is it worth it to get a certification in a specialty BEFORE graduation?

I'm just starting out as a student in a 12 month accelerated BSN program and I am already thinking about jobs. I've done some research and plan on applying to many places 2 months before graduation. Anyway, I was thinking if I got a certification in the specialty I want to work in if it would help me. I'm interested in applying to some nursing residencies in critical care, so I was thinking I'd get a critical care certificate to help my resume. Read More...

Is the first semester really the hardest?

I'm nearing the end of a very rough first semester mentally, emotionally and physically drained. I've lost 20+ pounds from stress since this semester began which NEVER happens. My kids are resentful and acting up because I haven't been there to help like I used to. My husband is whining that I'm never around, and my boss is complaining that I'm falling behind on work. Obviously, I knew I was taking on a lot, but I cut my hours way back and explained to the family that I needed to focus on school right now. Read More...
