Can RNs Really Make This Much?

My instructor last night whom's a RN/CNS and administrator at Kaiser, said that she has RNs on her floor making over $50/hour after their first year. I know nursing can be lucrative, but I was surprised at this type of earning potential after a year. I'm in Los Angeles so I know Cali can make more than other states, but this really shocked me. No wonder programs are impacted everywhere. I know (at least I hope) most people get into the profession for reasons other than money...

Abortion In Nursing School Rotations?

I am soon to enter my Maternity/Peds clinical portion. I'm curious to know if you see abortion procedures during these rotations. I'm speaking of elective and medical emergencies ... or would this be something that falls under OR? Can any of you share your experience in Maternity? Did you see any sad things? I know that, realistically, I will see some depressing stuff (already have) ... just want to know what to expect.

Petrified When Handling Residents That Expire...

I have a huge phobia when it comes to dealing with residents that expire. To be honest when ever I see an expired resident my pulse goes up , I tremble, and the image of their body stays in my mind. Whenever I suspect a resident on hospice has passed I always call an aide in the room when doing postmortum care. However, there was one resident that looked so scary when he passed that I couldn't even touch him. I feel like a terrible nurse and can't wait to get out of geriatrics. I know as a nurse I must see patients die but some of them look so scary and I can't sleep at night. Please help me, get over this phobia.

Student Discussions

Loans, Interest, Decisions, Oh My!! Help!

How bad is student loan debt!? Do you let it bother you? Are you worried to? Are you confident you'll snag a good loan repayment contract when you graduate? How much debt do you have? (Give me some comparative insight to help calm my nerves) how do you cope with it if its a lot!? Am I blowing this out of proportion? Is this the norm for us student nurses? How many of us are in the same boat?! How are we going to every get out of debt!

Think CNAs Will Pick Up LPNs Duties In Hospitals?

Since hospitals are no longer hiring LPN's ... I think CNAs could possibly have more job requirements later in the future. CNA's already do EKG's and blood draws at some hospitals with further training. In the LPN course at my college they do not teach IV's, they are told they wont do anything invovling IVs but yet when hired they prepare them! The only thing they cant do is push meds. Somebody will have to pick up the duties right, or you think Im wrong here?

Tired Of Hearing It, Nursing Students PLEASE Answer

I am currently working on my pre-reqs, and the sooner I get to applying, I am hearing more and more how "hard" nursing school is ... how it "sucks"... and how it is "really hard on relationships" ... My advisor has even said you have no life while going to NS. Please, please tell me what is it EXACTLY that makes them say this. Is it the work/study load? Is it clinical time? Is it that "hard"? what exactly? how is it different from what I am doing now with my classes?

Regional Discussion - Texas

Nursing Market Becoming Oversaturated?

As I am pounding through my core and support classes I am noticing more and more people either moving to texas or beginning to take nursing as their career. Has the state become oversaturated with nurses?

Right now, I am working towards a Biology degree and was then maybe going to pursue nursing but was thinking of putting that off and rather do nursing first and then work towards my degree in biology. Would having a degree in Biology and a AS in nursing better my chances at getting an internship/job?
