Yet another holiday, some musings about family.

Having completely uprooted my life not that long ago, I have often sat feeling sorry for myself because of how lonely I've been. I recently just realized how much AllNurses has done for me to get me out of that funk. If I am lonely, I come on and socialize. If I am upset, I come and vent to you guys. If I have a question, I know someone will have awesome advice for me. Like my family, there are a few here I look up to greatly. There are a few that just make me shake my head. There are also some I just love to hate! Read More...

My NCLEX journey

First let me start off by saying... I'm officially a nurse! It been a long and stressful journey, but it was 100% worth it!

I graduated December 2012 and couldn't wait to take my NCLEX. I decided to take HURST review to jump start my preparation. I absolutely loved HURST and there teaching method. During the class I was told that if you knew the content backwards and forwards you would no doubt pass the NCLEX. So after taking the 3 day course I did what I always do, made notecards. I must have had over 2000 notecards (which isn't unusual for me). I knew all of them and after a month of studying I decided to take my NCLEX on January 28. I was so nervous when I sat down. I started my test and froze. I hadn't done any practice questions because HURST had made it clear that their information would be enough. I took all 265 questions and was so upset. I knew I had failed... Read More...

Pearson Vue Trick was WRONG!!!!!!

I was crying so much after doing the pearson vue trick. I followed every direction on how to obtain it. I made sure my status said DELIVERY IS SUCCESSFUL. It went through the credit card page. I tried it so many times. I made sure AGAIN that my status said delivery is successful. and AGAIN, it went to the credit card page. I thought I failed. Read More...

How many are going straight for your BSN?

I just went through about 100 RN job postings, and I would say about 86 of them said BSN required or preferred. That was kind of a wake up call... now I am re-thinking everything again. Read More...

First clinical day was a nightmare

I literally saw the life get sucked out of this woman which I think is what scared me the most. To be interacting with my patient for the 2 hours that I did, I enjoyed it and this was the last thing I was expecting. I saw her go from anxious, to slowly turning blue and unresponsive and then dead. It was interesting to see this happen right before my eyes because not many see the process of when they are on the brink of life and death and boy did it happen quickly. Many just walk into something like that when the patient has already collapsed and dont see that transition. I think its very ironic that this happend to me because I always thought it was so cliche' for something like that to happen to a nursing student on their first day of clinical. My instructor even said out of all the years she has taught, she has never been a part of something like that. It was a mindblowing experience and definetely a story to tell my grand kids. Any other Military spouse students?

Are you basing the program you choose on your current orders and when you are expected to transfer? Have you started a program and then had to move before you finish?

We have 17 years in the Navy, 13 of it married, I am now starting my 3rd attempt to finish my schooling. I have attended the University of Rhode Island, Trident Technical College (SC) and now Tidewater Technical College (VA) and hope to finish finally. We just received orders to stay here another 4 years, so I am going to just get it done. One of the worst parts of starting the program all over the country is not all classes are transferable, that was a surprise to me, and an elbow to the eye. Read More...

Is it true that you can check if your classmate passed or failed the NCLEX?

My auntie's classmate knew my auntie passed her RN Boards before she even saw her results. Apparently, her classmate searched her name somewhere. Does anyone know this? What's the website? Isn't this a HIPAA violation?! If it is true, that's not fair. I wouldn't want anyone else to know my results without my consent. Read More...

Why are people criticizing my choice to get an ASN?

Hello, just hoping someone can put this into perspective for me, or maybe just offer some input or support.

I just got accepted into my local community college's nursing program. I live in a very large city so I know that an ASN will not be enough to get me a nursing job. The counselors at my school are very upfront about this, and I plan on attending an RN-BSN program immediately afterwards.

While I was taking my prerequisite classes, I spoke to other pre-nursing students and it feels like everyone else is moving on to the big, expensive (!!!) BSN programs in the area. Read More...

What really happens to applications submitted online?

Are there any managers here who post online ads for nurses, requesting resumes and etc.? If yes, are most of the ads bona fide, or are most of the ads just placed at random, to feel out the labor pool? Are resumes actually opened and looked at? I'm mighty curious. Reason being- I go to the same sites as time goes by, I see the same ads, with the same dates, over and over. If a job were available, and posted, eventually it'd be filled. But the ads remain. 'Send resume', or 'apply online', they same ads never seem to vanish. Anyone? Read More...

Which nursing program should I pick?

I have to choose in about a month, and I have absolutely no idea where I want to go. I've been accepted to:

  • Case Western Reserve University, OH (nursing)
  • Northeastern University, MA (nursing)
  • Baylor University, TX (pre-nursing)
  • Purdue University, IN (nursing)
  • University of Illinois at Chicago, IL (pre-nursing)

I've listed the schools in the order of financial ability. Which nursing programs out of these is the best? Does location of the school matter for clinicals? Read More...
