Good Writing Skills Are Essential

Like it or not, writing is an essential skill and you will be judged (either harshly or favorably) by your ability to communicate well in the written language. This article highlights common grammatical pitfalls to avoid. The ability to write well will get you far in your nursing career and gives you the competitive edge in a very tight job market. Pre-Nursing school immunization catastrophe!

I want other people to know what happened to me, so the same does not happen for them! When I received my nursing school admission, [of course] there was a long list of immunizations that I had to obtain before school started. I am 38 years old, so who knows where my shot records are from when I was a child, and I wasn't going to pay for the titers so I went to my local health department and sat down with a nurse, showed her my list of shots, and we came up with a plan to get them all done. NCLEX tutor, A&P tutor, Medicine tutor...

allnurses.com Nursing Student Cartoon

LOL! I can see it happening ... the more help you have the easier it is to learn and pass nursing school.

Do you or did you at any time have more than 1 tutor?  Were they helpful? Do you have any tips on how to find the perfect tutor?

Did you know?

How to avoid conflicts with instructor?

LPN classes officially start in a week. Already I am getting rubbed wrong by one of the instructors. Is it the norm for an instructor to be condescending as a general rule? Is the name of the game here to just suck it up, bite my tongue, and make darn skippy sure that I maintain good grades and ride it out? Read More...

Should I take a job as a medical scribe?

I'll be starting my first semester of nursing school in August. In addition I want to take statistics, so it's a very work intensive class load. I have recently been offered a job in an ER as a medical scribe. Although it doesn't involve any direct patient contact, the knowledge I'll gain by working so closely with a physician would be invaluable... Read More...

What books do you have on your desk?

You do not have to break the bank to have a decent working library. For your first couple of years of practice you'll probably be fine with your med/surg texts and other references from school to go back and reread prn when you have a new kind of patient to work with. When a specialty chooses you (note: that's usually what happens, rather than the other way around-- all of a sudden you find that, oh, endocrinology or something has stolen your heart away) you will want to get some books on that to deepen your understanding, and by then you'll have learned enough that you will be able to learn more in depth about it and want to join the nursing professional orgs that work with it. Thoughts on Nursing Students Association

I came across something I am interested in, but not very knowledgeable about. I live in Florida and we have the Florida Nursing Students Association. I have never been in any clubs or organizations before. Does anyone have any opinions about it? Or if you live in a different state and have something just like this, what is your take on it?

How does it benefit you if you participate in this for the future? Does it look better when you are applying for a job? Or possibly if you want to further your education, does it look better when applying to a masters or doctoral program? Read More...

What books to keep throughout nursing school?

I am currently ordering books for my first semester of nursing school. I'm using my university's bookstore, chegg, and half price. I have the option to rent some of these textbooks. My question is: Which classes did you keep the required books for reference throughout the rest of your nursing school? I don't want to end up renting a book when I'll need it later on down the road to help me with other classes. I also would love to save the money by renting. Read More...

Help! Took a baby break and I've forgotten everything...

I was accepted into a BSN program a year ago and took 5-6 classes such as patho, health assessment, etc. These are the basic nursing classes, and the 'real' classes with clinicals start later. Well, before that could happen I found out I was pregnant. I took a break from nursing school and now I am scheduled to go back this August. My problem? I feel so unprepared. I think I've forgotten everything. Read More...

Triage Decisions Differ for Paramedics and Physicians

Real-time emergency room triage decisions by paramedics agree with the triage decisions of emergency residents about half the time, according to a study published in the July issue of the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Read More...

Do you feel that patients look down on you because youre a CNA/HHA?

Does anyone feel like there is a lot of classism and prejudice when you do CNA/HHA type work? When I worked as a home health aide, I've had a couple of patients who treated me as if I was an uneducated person of inferior status. Some were verbally abusive and called me "stupid" quite a bit. (this was in homecare) There's no way I can work for a patient who regularly puts me down... Read More...

You're probably worried about the NCLEX..don't...seriously. Here's what I did!

So your about to take your exam in 1 week. You can't get any sleep. You wake up have a coffee and study from morning to night. This has been a ritual for you for a month. Question by question. Rationale to rationale. All skims your brain. All for that one day...where you are placed in a cubicle and forced to take the NCLEX, among many who are after that one goal...just to pass.
