Why do nurses "eat their young"?

I'm in my last semester and have met so many amazing nurses in my clinical experiences. These nurses were patient and willing to take a minute in their busy day to teach or allow me observe.

Of course I have also met nurses who wanted nothing to do with students. I've had nurses roll their eyes at me when being assigned a student, nurses introduce themselves by telling me "stay outta my way", nurses that don't want me to do anything with their patients, nurses that say "your assessments don't count, you're just a student", I've had nurses say "I don't get paid to teach", nurses that have been mean and rude. Why??? Haven't these nurses been new? Students Eager to learn? Read More...

Too late to be a nurse?

Thank you for reading my questions. I am turning 59 in two weeks and really want to be a nurse. Practically speaking, is it possible for me to be too old to learn the skills I'll need? And too old to be hired somewhere? Thank you for any advice - your points of view are invaluable to me right now. Read More...

[Toon] Are You a Nursing School Stalker?

You know how it is. You've applied to several nursing schools. But you really want to get accepted to your dream school. You keep checking the mailbox and your email. You've even made several calls to the admissions office. Have you done enough...or have you done too much. What have you done to make sure you've covered all the bases? Read More...

Nursing School changing criteria to pass classes

I am a sophomore at my nursing school and when I first began it was required for nursing students to pass the class with a 75% on their exams and have an overall score of a 75% to pass the class. Well now out of nowhere they have decided to change that rule and starting next fall you will need to pass your classes with an 80%. What is everyone else's minimum to pass their nursing classes at their nursing school? Read More...

Nursing school is killing my relationship!

My name is Jenna and I'm 22 and engaged. Before nursing school my fiancé and I were fantastic but a year into nursing school it has been entirely difficult. My question to my nurses and nursing students is, how do you save your relationship during nursing school? How do you have a successful relationship? Read More...

3/6 months... quitting the job...

It's been little over 3 months since I started this medsurg job... very busy floor with 6 max load, no phlebotomy team, very slow system, horrendous meditech charting, very ghetto clientele, your regular run-around-crazy-head-cut-off MS floor... I was going to soldier on 3 more months so I can internal transfer, but last night's shift sealed the deal for me... Read More...

Apples to Apples: Tell me about your program

I am curious about comparisons between programs and degree types. I'd like to actually see what the different programs include. We have all of these discussions about the benefits and downfalls of different degrees, and I'd like to join the discussion, but quite honestly I know very little about non-BSN programs, and I wish I did. Will you share details about your program? Read More...

Did you feel 100% ready??!!

I sit for my boards on April 10th, about 3 weeks from now. I've been studying for about 2.5 months and I'm using the Kaplan review course, Lacharity, and NCLEX 3500 to prepare. Even after all this studying I feel like I'll never be ready. Did those of you who passed go in knowing everything?? Read More...

Commute vs. Tuition savings

I'm in Philly and am a very much a non-trad student. Married with 5 young children. I have to be practical and while the "best" local schools are great, they are much too expensive, so I am considering commuting to some that are a little farther away.

I'm considering a 20 mile commute to Eastern Univ. I already have a B.S. degree but it is non-science. Eastern has the "2nd degree BSN" program that I need. Their most recent NCLEX pass rates were 88% which I wasn't thrilled about.

What do you think? Experiences? Suggestions for other schools? Read More...

A&P study guide 101

Just purchased the study guide 101 for A&P and wondering what's the best way to prepare for this exam with this guide? Read from page one to 1 thousand... Or focus on certain chapters. So confused on how to do this... Read More...

Should I do quick results or not? How long did it take to get your name on the BON?

I want to first say thanks so much for everyone on allnurses. This site helped me through school and NCLEX. I just took the NCLEX on Friday, March 21st and I did the Pearson Vue trick and got the "good pop up." But now I have the option to do quick results. I know it isn't a big deal to pay the $7.95 but I already got the "good pop up" and I will have to find out sooner or later anyways. Should I do the quick results or just wait it out because I "probably" already passed according to the Pearson Vue Trick? How long did it take for your name to appear on the BON list? Read More...
