Western Governors University (WGU) Readiness Assessment

Western Governors University (WGU) is an increasingly popular online school because it offers various features that appeal to adult learners. Some of these appealing features include very affordable tuition, nonprofit status, multiple choices of majors and concentrations, legitimate accreditation, and an innovative competency-based model that facilitates swift degree completion.

Since WGU is designed for the adult learner who already possesses some experience with coursework at the college level, prospective students are not required to take the traditional collegiate entrance exams such as the SAT or ACT. Instead, the school requires... Read More...

Three months to kill before Nursing School ... What to do?

In less than three months, I begin Nursing school. I'm super excited and wish that it would start tomorrow. While the 15 month program is super intense, I kind of like the fact that I can relax with my family until it begins. However, what would be some recommendations as to how to prepare for what lies ahead. Is there any must have books to read, Youtube video's to watch or anything that I should do to help acclimate once the program begins? Read More...

PT fell... Now I'm paralyzed with fear

I'm in my final semester of school doing my preceptorship/capstone. I'm on an ortho floor and really enjoying it. I received report on a PT who was not a risk for fall... Later in my shift I went in to check on him and he was getting up. He got up slowly and stumbled to the side and fell. I couldn't do much it all happened so fast, I got to his head and protected it as best as I could. I couldn't stop the fall though my hand was crushed into the wall forcefully. I went to the ED they splinted it... Read More...

Negativity toward nursing as a career choice

I've seen many pre-nursing students start topics here asking for advice regarding applying to nursing schools, competition, learning process, denials, challenges, difficulties finding a job, etc. And as a trend, I see lots of replies saying that all pre-nursing and nursing students should take their rose-colored glasses off and look reality in the face. They say that nursing is a bad career choice since the field is over-saturated, we will not find a job, everybody will treat us like crap and the pay is much lower than what we expect it to be.

Well let me tell you, every job will have its pros and cons, including nursing. I think nursing is a good career choice with great opportunities. To all of you who want to do it - go ahead! There is no "perfect job" nor "easy money". We all have to work for it and try to make the best out of the experience we get, unless you win a lottery and can afford helping people for free... Fundamentals instructor doesn't teach.

I am genuinely concerned about my fundamentals instructor. It's to the point where it could probably be borderline reported to the State Board of Nursing. Here's what a typical class session looks like... Read More...

Paying it forward!!

Just as each of us is different, so too are our study skills, our comprehension and our retention. With this, there is no 1 full proof way to adequately prepare for boards. What works for one may not work for another. This is where allnurses.com came in handy - reading through hundreds of posts I was able to personalize my own 'study plan' by adopting many of the study techniques, resources, tips and strategies graciously offered by fellow NCLEX takers - now it's my turn to pay it forward. Is it worth it to get LPN license while still in nursing school?

Since we'll be halfway done with our RN program at the end of the semester, our instructor handed out forms for us to apply for our LPN certificate from the school. If we do so, it allows them to report us as eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN and apply for an LPN license from the state BON. I'll still have 2 more semesters left to complete to be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN in May 2015.

Is it worth it to get the LPN license while still in nursing school? Does it help to have it while I'm seeking employment? Or should I just wait until next May when I can take the NCLEX-RN? Read More

Can we discuss Nursing caps and Hairstyles?

I am graduating in May! YAY! We will be doing our pictures after returning from spring break, so I have gotten all the things required, including my cap. I have no idea how to wear my hair with this thing, down, part up, part down, all up?! The picture will hang on the college hall walls for years to come, so I am a little obsessed with not looking like an idiot. LOL I tried doing a Google search, and Pinterest but really did not come up with much. Anyone have any ideas they care to share? Read More...
