I lied...a story of how I outright LIED to patient's family.
I got the call on the EMS radio around 5 am. This is the usual time we get calls from EMS responding to nursing homes- The nurses are rounding on their patients to give am meds, and they find their residents dead or in distress. An 87 yo female, febrile, and in severe respiratory distress coming in. Pt is a DNR, but family is very involved, is aware, and will meet them in the ER.

Around this time of year, I like think about the previous year: what has changed, what has stayed the same, and what I am truly thankful for. It is easy to have a negative day, or a positive day, and just focus on that, but it’s the big picture that is what is most important. When I decided to apply for a BSN program when I was 17 and a senior in high school, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and one thing that I am always thankful for.

A Glass of Prune Juice
Sundays are usually pretty good days at my nursing home. Church people come and hold a little service with singing and piano playing. The CAN’s don’t have showers to give. Someone will usually bring the nursing staff some kind of treat, like doughnuts or pigs in a blanket. The atmosphere is just a little bit relaxed and residents and staff are in a bit of a weekend mood.

My coworkers are whining that they have to do their jobs (whether it be transport, techs, RNs, or providers). Students are complaining that the entire universe has it in for them (because no one else has problems). The patients are all complaining that they've had to wait 5 whole minutes for XYZ...

I think I wanted to became a nurse because I had always cared for members of my family due to one illness or another growing up. I was always helping someone. I liked medicine and blood didn't bother me.
