My earliest influence on my decision to be a nurse came from a neighbor who was a nurse in Vietnam. Many of the most famous nurses were heroes from a previous war. There is very little written about a Vietnam nurse leader or about nurse heroes from that era. The word NO in this instance, needs to be in caps. Overtime, working extra shifts are a reality. Deciding to work extra though is or should be your choice. allnurses hears frequently about nurses being "mandated," "forced" or made to feel guilty if they turn down an extra shift. When you don't want to work that extra shift, what do you say? Do you make up an excuse or do you just say NO!?

What is the point of waking people up at 0600 in order to give them a medication such as Prilosec or Synthroid (Tylenol?) - then telling them to "go back to sleep"? Why must we send a person who is peacefully dying to the ER to undergo some more torture before they finally pass? Why, why why? Where is the gentleness?

I was horrified to know that not only does my hospital not have a policy against this, but the house supervisor told me I was not allowed to tell them to stop! These are sick people here! I understand people say they have "physical needs," but can we draw a line somewhere?!
