Top 10 Things I Loved About Nursing

As a late-middle-aged RN who is newly retired from clinical nursing, I'd like to share a retrospective on a long and fruitful career that brought me a fair share of heartache, but also great joys. These are the things I loved about nursing. I hope that perhaps you'll see something of yourself in the paragraphs that follow and appreciate what your profession has given you.

Let's call it "organ support," not life support

This is an idea that originated in a legal nursing group discussion about the brain-dead teen at Children's in Oakland. While I completely understand the family's pain and that a lot of it is due to misunderstandings, I think the language we use in these situations contributes to this, and would like to spread the idea that better language would be more descriptive.

What would it be like if the health care people involved in this didn't say that a brain-dead person was on "life support," but instead called it "organ support"? Read More

Nursing Salary Survey 2014

Compensation is an extremely important aspect for the overwhelming majority of people who must work for a living, including the nurses who claim to do their jobs for purely altruistic reasons. Salary surveys can empower nurses because they unearth valuable information.

As we welcome the dawn of a propitious new year that is brimming with plenty of promise and new beginnings, I wanted to bring up a topic that is influential to most people. Of course, the topic at hand is compensation. Read More
