I have now been sober for 2 years I do having a nursing job in my field as a WIC nurse at the health dept. Which I consider myself completely lucky as hell. I graduated from nursing school top of my class and recently decided I wanted to go back to school for my Master's in Nursing. I believe this may help me to enter a new chapter in my life to prove to everyone and myself that I am a successful person, look what I did after my whole life went down the drain. I feel like it would help me get my confidence back. I would love to be a pediatric nurse practitioner, but if I went through all that schooling and paid all that money would it all be for nothing? If you do, what is it? Read More HIPAA violation or heads-up?We had an incident at work the other day where a patient on a schedule 2 medication (requiring a written script) was found to have altered said script. The pharmacy called and then faxed a copy to us. It was blatant and not even a particularly good effort. This patients meds were canceled and he's no longer our patient. My question... if his new physician calls or requests records, are we legally allowed to divulge this info? Read More Patients destroying pain meds?Just wondering how other clinics handle the situation of destroying pain meds. For example, say a patient was prescribed Percocet, but they had a reaction to it, so the doctor wants them to get rid of the Percocet before giving them a prescription for Vicodin. I know the pharmacy won't take meds back...and the clinic can't take the meds...how can you be sure the patient will destroy them? Can you make them destroy them AT the clinic? But then what do you do with them once destroyed? Read More What's the best thing you like about the ER? What's the least you like?I'm a med surge nurse with 1.5 years experience in ortho neuro trauma at a level 1 hospital . I am used to getting 2-4 admits and doing about 3-4 discharges a day. I would love to advance to the ER. I have an offer, but a part of me is scared to do it! The patient ratio is 4 unless vented or ICU status then 1. They do a podding system where you buddy up with your nurse so that means at times more then 4 patients. I wanna know what you guys think is the best part of working in the emergency room? And what do you think is the worse? Read More My dying student taught me how to say goodby....
What do you do first, besides "ABC"?My biggest challenge in the ED is prioritizing. I always use the ABC as a rule of thumb, however I still feel overwhelmed with the other tasks such as discharging, admitting, and receiving patients. For an example: When I have a patient to discharge and a new patient to see which one comes first? Should I finish my discharge, then see the new stable patient? Or should I assess the new patient then discharge? Read More Replaced by Certified Medication Aide!Yes, fellow LPNs, its happening here in Northeast Ohio! Trained and oriented CMA and was then given extreme part-time hours(as were the other LPNs) while CMA gets 40hrs and benefits! And of course, they are paid less per hour. The entire program is a disaster for us LPNs as well as the patients we care for and they don't get a choice either. No such thing as patient care...its all about money and its sickening. How long does the "new nurse anxiety" usually last?As a new nurse I basically have, to a degree, an anxiety attack before work (new grad in the ED). Once I'm actually on the floor it feels like the anxiety is gone, but it's back after I'm off for a few days. I just want to be able to work without feeling like this and be able to enjoy and look forward to going to work. I've discussed this with others and they say this is normal, but how long did it take YOU to feel more comfortable or less stressed as a new nurse? Read More How to survive 16h shifts?I'm a new graduate working on a cardio floor in a big teaching hospital and I've got some nasty 16h shifts coming up ( quite many ) ... What are your tricks to surviving those? If any? Oh, and these are 4pm to 8 am shift... Read More
