Should Healthcare Be Funded As A Basic Human Right?

The United States of America is a nation known and heralded worldwide for its democracy, freedom, and wealth. Through our commerce, we have become a prosperous nation. Through our commonalities we stand united. Through our shared citizenship, we establish our community. Through our voices, we are heard. So why is it, our nation has been divided against the idea of health care being funded as a basic human right?

U.S. Senator, Ted Kennedy, once said, Health care is not just another commodity. It is not a gift to be rationed based on the ability to pay. It is time to make universal health insurance a national priority, so that the basic right to health care can finally become a reality for every American. (2003). Read

Pediatric Oncology

This is arguably one of the most emotionally stressful areas of nursing, depending on your point of view. Of course I would choose this as my area of interest and future specialty. As the saying goes: It's a tough job...but someone's got to do it. Read

Concern/question about PMHNP and Clinical Psychologists

If clinical psychologists gain more prescriptive rights in the future, what could this mean for PMHNPs (and psychiatrists for that matter)? Will there still continue to be a higher demand for the psych NP over the prescribing psychologist? Like I said, I'm undecided between both right now and I've always had a love for psych. I didn't have an interest in cardiology until nursing school. However, I don't want to spend tons of money on schooling if I won't be able to find a job. Do you think prescribing psychologists could possibly phase out PMHNPs (and psychiatrists) since there are so many psychologists? Or do you think PMHNPs will be more preferred over psychologists due to their medical/nursing background? Read

A Nation Of Nonreaders

I first noticed this serious problem when I was 19 years old and working at a grocery store.

One of my coworkers, a middle-aged mother of three who had been married for 15 years, asked for my assistance with reading and properly completing a time-off request form. “I am not good at writing things, "she chimed with a smile on her face. She added, “I forgot my glasses, so I can't see this paper too well today." Read.

Working for Indian Health Service and Travel Nursing

I am a graduate Registered Nurse and I have been trying to get that first year of hospital experience bc I plan to travel nurse. Unfortunately I live in NY and the hospitals here are not taking new grads at all. I have looked into Indian Health Service because they take new grads, but I'm a little concerned that it won't be enough for the agencies to consider me for a travel nurse position in another yr or so. Should I not waste my time and just keep looking for a regular hospital job in a specialty? Read

What Type of Nursing is Right for Me?

I feel a calling towards psychiatric nursing, seeing as Texas is the 48th state for "best" mental health care. I believe this area of nursing is frequently over looked, and it interests me deeply. Not many of my classmates enjoyed this portion of our education, therefore I am having difficulty finding somebody to relate to in my interest for mental health care. I plan on speaking with my psychiatric nursing professor about job opportunities available to me in the psychiatric field. I just want to make sure this is really the area I would like to work in. I still have quite a bit of time before I graduate but I know it will creep up on me faster than I will realize. So I suppose my question is: how did you all know which area of nursing was right for you? Read

Dear Nursing Students/Orientees: A Love Note from the Preceptor from Hell

So often what we do pushes us to our edge where we struggle to not only live the moment we are in, but to redefine ourselves and our goals. Written in an exhausted, frazzled moment after an insane day and a night of trauma call. Posted because I know there are more orientees like mine and more preceptors like me. Read

Intravitreal Pegaptanib Useful in Diabetic Macular Edema

For patients with diabetes with clinically significant macular edema (CME), treatment with intravitreal pegaptanib sodium (Macugen), which selectively inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor-165 isoforms, is associated with significant morphological and functional changes, according to a study published in the December issue of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. I think I'm in over my head

I am new to this site and I am just looking for some advice. I graduated in August and got a job in the MICU/CICU. I started in the beginning of November and it was the most intimidating thing I have ever done. On my first day I had my own patients (vent patients) and I felt like I was going to cry! My preceptor was no help, in fact to my face she would say I was doing great then I would be called into the educators office at the end of the shift and she would tell me I needed to much prompting. After two weeks of that they decided I needed to go to PCU for a few weeks to get better training. Read

New to NICU, but not nursing...

I've been a nurse for almost two years (in March). I started as a new grad on a med-surg tele floor and then just spent 6 months on LDRP. But I realized it's definitely NOT for me...Before becoming an RN I was a CNA in a Special Care Nursery and fell in love. It became my dream and passion and am so excited that I got offered a job at a Level III NICU! However, I'm so nervous! I was told that right now there isn't a "new to NICU" orientation, but only a "general" orientation. Read
