A question for NP's - What if our school preceptorship isn't so great? It seems my preceptors have me doing the routine chart checks, while they work the harder patients ...I just sometimes don't feel I get the chance to work thorugh the really tougher patients. Maybe they don't think I'm ready ... I just don't know. All I wonder is what if our "school" clinical experience is not that hot? Does it really matter after graduation? One of my preceptors seems to say that I really won't learn "the real deal" until I'm out. Read Having a celebrity as a patientAnyone ever had a celebrity as a patient or a celebrity in your place of work? Please share any information if possible. Did you experience any problems because they were there? ie. fans, phone calls, etc Read Did I just get thrown under the bus? Or I'm a bad nurse?New nurse and going on my first month in LTC (first nursing job) and boy, is it difficult. I don't get a break, barely pee and just overwhelmed. They say I'm doing a very good job and happy to have me, but I feel just like a bumbling idiot most of the time. I constantly question my interventions, and having a hard time building that confidence. Read Jon Stewart Puzzled Why Combat Medics Can't Apply for Nursing JobsCombat medics undoubtedly serve an important and difficult role, but Stewart appears to be comparing apples and oranges. It seems that states' licensing bodies for emergency medical technicians are more to blame for the problems experienced by these two fine people than the fact that medic experience is not sufficient to qualify for the NCLEX and become a nurse. Jon Stewart correctly points out that combat medics are obviously qualified for EMT-P certification, but starts the segment reading qualifications for nursing positions. Additionally, the physician assistant position was designed to give medics from the Vietnam era an avenue to civilian employment, but that now takes six years of education rather than the two it required when the occupation was born. I think there should be better opportunities for veterans, but I don't think that nursing is the problem here. Read ![]() A mentor who made a difference for meThe nurse who broke me as a graduate, did more than mentor me. She went way out of her way to support me by picking me up and taking me home as we only had one car. She understood the difficulty of having one car and working opposite shifts form my husband. Read. When did you figure out your specialty?Just out of curiosity, how long did you guys take until you found your specialty? And what was your specialty you chose. I want to be a NP someday and I was thinking about how long I should work as an RN before I began to apply for grad school. Read Malpractice InsuranceI can't really find a whole lot about this subject. I graduate next month and start my first job in January. How does everyone go about finding malpractice insurance and what is the typical costs for such? Read A Preemie Teaches Me...Lying under radiant heat, hooked to machines, wires, and tubes; fine thin hair covers your small vulnerable body. You struggle for each breath you take. I look at you and marvel at your strength. Strength not measured by physical power but by the power to persevere and overcome daily adversities. You teach me to never take a single breath for granted. Read HA: Device Uses Heartbeats to Power Pacemaker![]() An experimental device about half the size of the batteries currently used in implantable devices can harness enough energy from a beating heart to generate adequate power to run a pacemaker, according to a study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2012, held from Nov. 3 to 7 in Los Angeles. Read Discrimination & Whistle blowing - Would you hire this nurse again?I was discriminated against when I applied for a job. In other words, a job offer at a hospital was rescinded due to their discrimination against me. I sued them and won. A few years later, similar thing happened. I got a job at a well known hospital, worked at the place, and the manager discriminated me. Since she couldn't make it obvious that the discrimination as the reason for terminating me, she micromanaged me and came up with a bunch of things that a new orientee might get wrong or make mistakes on to get me fired. Now, my lawyers are about to sue that hospital also. I have been looking for a new job for the last 6 months since the fancy hospital manager let me go. My question is, is my career doomed because my name is tarnished all over the internet as a “litigious nurse,” or does it really matter? Read Confessions Of A Nurse With Poor Interpersonal SkillsI have watched as many technically-skilled nurses have gotten fired for their inability to get along with others and their poor interpersonal skills. To be blunt, these great nurses simply did not have the likeability factor. Hands-on procedural skills and the ability to assess are critical to keeping patients alive, but interpersonal skills are crucial to success in most occupations. Read
