Nursing Leadership Styles (Part III): Laissez-Faire Leaders

An individual's leadership style refers to the manner in which (s)he leads. Three primary leadership styles exist on a continuum: authoritarian, democratic, and Laissez Faire. The intended purpose of this three-part essay is to further explore the various styles of leading. This particular article (part III) will examine the Laissez-Faire style of leadership.

How'd you choose? Because I don't know how!

Student here. Thought I'd be brave enough to come over to the adult side(lol) and ask a few questions!

First, how on earth did you decide what you wanted to specialize in? Did you have it planned before you started school, or did you make your decision as you went along in clinical?

Also, did you get "stuck" in what you did your preceptorship in? Or were you able to do something else?

Handling rude or dishonest patients

I just get so frustrated with these patients! It seems as though they're just looking for a way to get staff in trouble or make it seem as though they aren't being cared for.

What do y'all do about patients like this? My fear is that these patients will complain that I didn't take care of them and I'll get in trouble.

How do you get a very combative patient to take a shower

I have a client who refuses showers. He comprehends most things but seems withdrawn and has alzheimers. When asked if he will let us give him a shower he gets agitated. If we explain that it is important that he is clean for hygeine and health reason he gets more agitated. if we say his family really wants him to have a shower because they care about him, he gets even more agitated...

This is EXACTLY why I don't like taking Verbal orders

I notify the doc of a pt. with increasingly high B/P. I bring the chart to the doc to write the order. He tells me to take a verbal. He tells me the order and I have a very hard time understanding due to his accent and he had to repeat it twice. I read back the order and he confirmed. The order still didn't sit right with me so I go to him a third time to clarify, and finally received the correct order. I then explained to the doc that VO should not be taken as they lead to medication errors, he just laughed...
