Despite my long held and non-negotiable policy against being naked where I work, I now expect to bare it all to anesthesia (some of whose numbers I've worked beside for nearly a decade in the ICU) and surgeons (some of whom have done rotations through my ICU) in early June. My husband talked me into it.
Have you ever had to deal with a difficult patient?
It's challenging to say the least, but did you know that they help you become a better nurse?
It's not always easy to find the reason behind unruly patients but if you can manage then you can successfully deal with every patient.
How do you deal with difficult patients? Do you have any tips you can share with the community?

If someone came up to you and asked you about Florence Nightingale what would you say? Try to describe her in as few words as possible.
I know there are posters here that don't get/don't care about other people using the title "nurse," and that's fine. To each their own, no big deal. I'm just one of those people that it DOES bother, and hearing that exchange fired me up a little. The way she had to tack that word on the end...."REGISTERED"....like THAT is what makes the difference here. I realize that some MA's are registered and some are not, yes....it just has nothing to do with being a nurse either way.
I've come to find out in the last 2 weeks, that another nurse has been spreading lies about me throughout the facility, as well as to other nurses in the area. She is saying I'm 'on drugs' and 'stealing narcotics'. This is a SERIOUS allegation, and I am NOT!! She's basing her entire theory on the fact I give OUT more PRN meds than she does, but this is because I'm actually on the floor, interacting with the patients, who ask me for meds, whereas she sits behind the desk and ignores the call lights. She also used to be an ADON elsewhere, and has the mentality that getting other people in trouble makes HER look better, so she constantly does it.
What should I do?
Should a gay male LPN reveal his sexual orientation to clients when asked? Some might say go ahead...your facility can't fire you for it...it's against the law? But actually, I live in Nebraska and it is legal to fire someone based on sexual orientation. And even if it was illegal it would be easy for an employer to fire an employee based on sexual orientation and then try to pass it off as if it were for some other reason.
I accompanied my husband to hospital several times over the past few weeks, and a couple of things have really puzzled and slightly annoyed me.
First off, we went to see a consultant, who had to examine my husband's abdomen. The consultant asked my husband to remove his shirt and lie on the bed, so my husband started taking his shirt off as he was walking to the bed. The consultant hurriedly ushered my husband towards the bed, and closed the curtain as if trying to protect my husband's privacy (from me - his wife?!). I found that a bit odd, especially as he only had to remove his shirt. Does he not think I've seen my husband's chest before?
Secondly, when my husband went...
A new combination treatment of controlled-release phentermine/topiramate (PHEN/TPM CR) leads to significantly greater weight loss than a placebo even in individuals with significant obesity-related comorbidities, according to a study presented at the European Congress on Obesity, held from May 9 to 11 in Lyon, France.
I'm so frustrated I don't know what to do and I feel all my schooling and critical thinking are not being used and consequently I'm losing the ability to really understand what is going on with my patients. If you can suggest anything at all to improve my resume: classes etc...
For all my fellow male nurses out there, state your department and rate your "caring" and rate your "knowledge/expertise" in your area/department
As an ER nurse, I feel like my "caring" could be better, but my knowledge makes up for it plus some RN CEN CCRN, 5 yrs exp, 4 in the ER Caring - 3, knowledge - 8.5
