I was down and hard on myself because it seemed like most of my classmates have gotten jobs. I kept on thinking, what is wrong with me? I graduated almost near the top of my class! I volunteer! I (think) my resume and cover letter rocks! Then one day, I read a post on allnurses.com that absolutely changed my life...
An Orthopedic and Perioperative RN recently back from a disaster response to Northern Kentucky this past March writes about trying to answer the questions "Why do you do it? Why do you respond to disasters?" In the article he shares his struggle to find the answer and the amazing note from a friend that finally gave him an answer.
I think all nurses have had mornings feeling like this.

I was wondering if anyone on here had received a shorter orientation than they were expecting for a hospital position. I've basically been offered my dream position at a local hospital, but my orientation will be one week. I'm a relatively new RN, and have no hospital work experience.
Any advice for making the most of it?
Have you ever witnessed something that took your breath away on the clock? Maybe it was a small miracle, but you never forgot it. But nothing medical or scientific could explain it. Or maybe it could, but yet the odds were against it totally?
Early this week, we posted an ad for RN charge nurse with no experience required. We feel it's best to have trainable nurses even though they lack experience. I was tasked to interview for the position as I will be the one training them for the first 36-hours.
Needless to say, I was flabbergasted with the array of applicants we had and now know why the some nurses eat their young...
...To go outside for a "walk," do you have them sign an AMA form?
I've never thought about it until yesterday when I received report on a patient who likes to go downstairs a lot with a family member for a walk. The dayshift RN had the patient sign an AMA form just in case and told me that you're supposed to do that, but I'm not sure if that is an actual policy that we have.
The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents has increased 66 percent in the last decade, with approximately one-third of these young patients now being managed by psychiatrists, rather than pediatricians, according to research published in the March issue of Academic Pediatrics.
Much is being made of the nursing shortage, but the sad fact of the matter is that much of this shortage is a self-inflicted wound. "30%-50% of all new RN's elect either to change positions or leave nursing completely within the first three years of clinical practice"...
I have been researching several different nurse anesthesia programs and have come across both the Masters and Doctorate programs in anesthesia. I have a few questions and concerns, I figured who better to ask then a large group or CRNA's. Firstly, I was curious if CRNA's with a Doctorate degree had a substantial advantage over CRNA's with a Master's degree. Do they have that much better of an education, make more money, have an easier time finding a job, etc
This is my first time posting a thread-had an absolute train wreck last night and it was my first time I had to call a code. I'm a newly licensed RN (working less than a year) and had my worst case to date so far-pt. was transferred to our unit in septic shock. She had previously came from the NSICU as a rule out CVA. Pt. with history of R. Pneumonectomy and DM type 2. Her CT scan showed humongous L. sided pneumonia, so oxygenation...
