Nursing Career Advice
I have about two weeks left and I will be finished with my BSN. I want to continue and pursue my MSN but am unsure at this point about which specialty would be best. I have went back and forth between education, nurse practitioner, or nurse administration. When I first went to continue my education for my BSN, my goal was to go into education. However, I have tried to research every angle to see what would be the best options as far as job outlook, salary, etc. I am just torn on what to do. I thought I would ask here for any suggestions...thanks!
I want to warn everyone about shady agencies taking advantage of nurses and nurse practitioners looking for a job in this tough economy. These agencies post deceptive ads with jobs that never exist. They use the "bait and switch" technique get awarded lucrative government contracts from the military and government. This same thing happened to IT professional and engineers a while ago. I guess the scam has moved to healthcare since IT is not as profitable anymore.

We nurses are sometimes our own worst enemies. Far too often, lay people demonstrate misunderstanding and disrespect for nurses. Why shouldn't they, when they learned at least some of it from us?
The bottom line in health care these days is $$$$$$$$$. Upper management staff are hired to weed out and improve that bottom line, by any means necessary! They are not interested in 'moral' they are only interested in pleasing the board of directors.
Specialty Nursing
I am a new grad in ob... If a woman does not have an epidural I feel incredibley uncomfortable doing dilitation checks. The pt usually squirms with discomfort, and it makes me feel bad! Of course I try to be as gentle as one can possibley be, but when they are at a -3/-2 station I have to reach far. Does this feeling go away with time, or how do you cope with it? Am I just being overly sensitive?
I have been doing home health visits for about a year now sporatically for a staffing company, however I just took a full-time position as a visiting nurse. This position is 8am-4pm, monday-friday, and I'm on call one weekend a month. My question is for those of you who have similar jobs.. Do you work on holidays like Christmas, Labor Day, Easter, etc. Or is someone usually on call for those days? I mainly want to know ahead of time to see if I need to figure out childcare for those days.
Regional Discussion - California
I am now seriously questioning my right to strike and if indeed I have placed my pts in danger. Oncology is too intense of a practice to view nurses as interchangable commodities. While a mistake could have been made by anyone at any time the reality is less mistakes are likely when nursing is practiced by a consistent team of experienced RN's. My heart goes out to the family of the pt as well as to the traveling RN who made the med error and I am just heartsick over it all.
