I hate what's happening to nursing...

I hate what nursing is becoming. It is become overrun with elite folks who have forgotten what it’s like to just get through your shift. It’s being taken over by money hungry CEOs that are finding neat little ways to package “customer service” with healthcare. Our intelligence is being insulted here! What exactly do I mean by this? Well, what professional do you know gets “scripts” to regurgitate at patients? Why is it that we are not trusted to do our job or say the right thing?

I give in to drug seeking patients

I am a sucker for a drug seeking patient. It's not that I actually feel sorry for them, or that I am too stupid to see right through their ploys. It's just that I don't feel like it's my place to judge them. I also don't think that I am willing to take the risk that they may NOT merely be drug seeking, that maybe they are really having actual pain. Drug seekers often DO have pain. And just because they are annoying does not give me the right to deny them the medication their pain warrents.

Reality Check for Nursing Hopefuls

Jobs are very hard to get, with 300 or more applicants for each position at some places. It can take years to get your first nursing job. So, if the school is selling you the idea that your going into a "guaranteed" job, your not.

How can you tell if nursing is a good fit for you?

How do you know if nursing is right for you? I am coming from a background of marketing and business, and am just unsure of how much I will like the actual job. I will say that I am really enjoying what I'm learning in anatomy class, and I'm getting good grades so far. I think part of my concern is that I will get through nursing school and then hate it.

Hope is NOT for the faint of heart

I have learned in my almost three years as an unemployed RN that Hope is the one thing that can really keep you motivated. Despite all the negativity about the job market, if you keep just a little kernel of hope you can stay positive. But it's still a hard journey and not for the faint of heart. It is very easy to just give up, on both your hopes and your dreams.

So You want An Adventure? Forget Bungee Jumping - try Nursing

When I became a nurse I never imagined how nontraditional of a career I would have. Always one for excitement and adventure, I decided to take on the world of correctional nursing! I figured being a native New Yorker this would be a cake walk! Working in a jail or a prison is not a cake walk, but it is an education within itself. You can learn a lot about how people think and the manipulative things that actually happen in everyday encounters.

HealthGrades Finds Rates of Patient Safety Events Vary

Patients treated at hospitals rated with a HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award have, on average, a 46 percent lower risk of experiencing a patient safety incident compared to those treated at the lowest-ranked hospitals, according to the eighth annual HealthGrades Patient Safety in American Hospitals Study published online March 9.

2nd Career in Nursing

I am planning to start my prereqs this summer in order to apply for a Accelerated BSN program... I live in South Jersey so UMDNJ and Jefferson are among the programs I am interested in..

This is such a risk for my husband and I... I make a decent salary now, which I think is comparable to BSN salaries in my area ...however my real concern would be to not find a job. In my research I am finding that it is very difficult to find a job in New Jersey as an RN. Just wanted to see if I can get some thoughts from any other 2nd degree BSN... How did you make the change? Was it a financial risk for you?

I just want to feel like I am doing good in my life!
