The Patient Nurse by General E. Speaking, RN

It is not easy to switch roles. Especially if one has been in their particular role for a couple of decades. It just doesn’t feel "right" to be the patient. I did not like it, not one bit. To make matters worse, I was a patient in my own hospital.

Thank You On Behalf Of The General Public by thetaterelate

I would just like to thank the nurses who attended to my son, myself and the rest of my extended family in 2009, and by extension to every nurse around the world who similarly attended to suspected broken feet and legs (myself and my son), gall stones (mother-in-law) and to the bizarre occasion when my son managed to get his foot jammed into the side of an escalator at the local amusement park.

Not Convinced Nursing Is an Autonomous Profession by Inspired By Silence

I'm not trying to stir up a war. I realize I've just started a thread on a very controversial topic here. But I'm simply not convinced nurses have much autonomy. There are some aspects of nursing that appear independent, such as how nurses are governed by other nurses in terms of licenses, credentialing, certifying colleges, etc, but in the clinical setting, you do what the physician says. You can't giving a patient watered down nasal spray without a physician order. Catheterizing, wound dressing, dress removal, aside from taking vitals, recording the information, and advocating for the patient, you can't do anything a physician hasn't ordered in terms of providing care.

Having Another Nurse Check Insulin Doses & Other Med Qs by Plagueis

There is talk going around work that management is thinking about requiring nurses to have another nurse double-check insulin doses, meaning another nurse would have to watch one draw it up, and sign that it's the correct insulin and dose. I'm assuming this is another check to prevent med errors. I've heard about this happening at some hospitals, but this is LTC, where we have up to 30 residents...

Complaints You've Heard During Nursing School by guiltysins

I know some of these things are things that all students complain about, so they're not stupid. They just need to realize that it's not only our school that makes you do these things. Most are the standards for every program. But some of these are just dumb, I'm guessing because they just didn't know how intense a nursing program is, especially since our school has pretty easy admission compared to others (3.0 gpa and 75 overall on HESI A2)

CNA Personalities by fuzzywuzzy

I'm sure we have all run into every one of these people at our jobs! The Martyr- Anytime this CNA does the tiniest little thing that's not on her assignment, she has to roll her eyes and announce it to everyone, thereby making what could have been a pleasant surprise for someone else into a reason for them to feel inadequate. The Nag...

What Is It REALLY Like For New Grads Right Now? by JamieA0321

I'm new to the forum and have been reading up a storm on various threads and now I'm starting to freak out a bit. I have been considering a career change to the medical field for 5 years now. I WISH I would have done it 5 years ago, but I guess at this point it is neither here nor there. I am finishing up my pre reqs now. The earliest I'll be able to apply would be for spring, 2011 admission, but probably not until spring/summer 2012 admission as I will need to take a few extra classes which I've already taken, but they are too old. I'm doing that this spring and summer.
